Just wanted to share the sad news that NYPD Detective Steven McDonald passed away this week after a heart attack at the age of 59. Det. McDonald was shot by a 15 year-old boy in Central Park in the 1980's, leaving him paralyzed, and became famous after he publicly forgave the teenager and went around the city and the world preaching peace and forgiveness while discussing his ordeal. Detective McDonald went to many schools, including my elementary school, to speak to youth about what happened to him and how to rise above setbacks in life. While I wish it wasn't so long ago so I could remember what he told my class better, I am glad I got to see him in person before he passed. I didn't get to meet him per se but he spoke to my class as a whole in person. But I am glad for that at least.
