Authorities in Colorado have been trying to identify the killer(s) of three people inside a bowling alley for more than a decade. AMW aired this case in 2003 and 2005.
On the evening of Jan 27, 2002, a woman planning on picking up her roommate from a local Littleton, Colorado bowling alley discovers the bodies of three people inside. The deceased were lane manager James Springer, lane employee Erin Golla and a young bowler named Robert Zajac. All had been shot to death. A witness described the gunman as a bald stocky white male wearing a trench coat. Interestingly, the bowling alley had been broken into a week ago but was unsuccessful in stealing a safe.
AMW airings pointed out a few clues that may or may not be related to the murders. Authorities found two jackets inside the Bowling Alley office, they were never reclaimed. The second clue was a suspicious man (not the depicted gunman in the sketch shown above) who was talking to James and Erin the night of the murders. He was never identified and was not believed to be a regular at the Bowling Alley.
Other media reports bring up a few other pieces of information. The first being that one month after the Littleton murders, David Bachman shot and killed his girlfriend and a close friend before committing suicide, this all occurred in Santa Cruz, California. The three had played pool in the bowling alley a few days before the murder. DNA testing from Bachman's parents didn't match DNA found at the bowling alley (where the DNA from the crime scene came from is uncertain, perhaps from a harmonica found inside one of the jackets). The article I read mentions the DNA could have come from someone else other than the killer, although that's only speculation. There was never a publicized motive as to why Bachman committed the murder-suicide in California. It would be interesting to see if Bachman matched the description of the gunman seen by the witness. However Bachman's been dead for 11 years now so I doubt he's the killer.
Another possibility is that Erin Golla who had connections to a meth ring was targeted. An investigation into the ring didn't produce any decent leads and no one involved claimed to know anything about the Littleton murders.
Thoughts? I'm curious about the man who was talking to James and Erin before the murders. He may be an accomplice (perhaps a lookout for the gunman in this case). This could have been a robbery gone bad or it could be drug related. The robbery the week before the triple murder makes a drug-motivated triple murder a bit unusual. However there isn't very much to work with and it's going to take some decent new leads to move this horrible case forward.
