RAVENNA TWP., Ohio (WKBN) – Police are continuing their search for a murder suspect they consider armed and dangerous after a double-murder in Ravenna Township.
Wednesday, Ravenna High School and surrounding areas were placed on lockdown while investigators looked for 25-year-old David Darnell Calhoun, Jr., who they say fatally shot a man and pregnant woman.
The Portage County Sheriff’s Office is heading up the investigation and manhunt. Sheriff David Doak was on the scene Wednesday and says people in the area should still be on alert.
“We do not know where he is or where he went. I can’t sit here and guarantee anyone’s safety, however, we are doing some additional patrols in the neighborhood. We’re doing everything we can to try to run down his whereabouts and take him into custody.”
Calhoun also goes by the nickname “DBlock” and has a very long history with drug crimes, including heroin and cocaine.
A records search revealed that Calhoun served a five-year sentence in prison for robbery and was released on parole April 13, 2016. According to court records, his parole was revoked two days before the shooting for failing a drug test.
Doak says an attack like this is unusual in what is normally a quiet community.
In a 911 call, one of the victims, 32-year-old Sarah Marsh, can be heard telling the dispatcher, “I just got shot,” followed by labored breathing. In the 10-minute call, bystanders scream for help and wait for the ambulance to arrive.
“She was also ten weeks pregnant, which is also tragic. Just a tragic loss of life,” Doak said.
Police say 33-year-old LeShaun Sanders was also killed on Henderson Road.
One of Sanders’ nieces lives in the house that her “Uncle Peepers” was shot and killed outside of. She says she saw the entire thing.
“We thought they were firecrackers. We looked outside and he was shooting in the window, oh my God, and seconds later, my uncle was dead.”
The niece says Sanders and Marsh were shot just outside of the garage, where there is still blood on the ground Thursday.
She says the family knows Calhoun and that they were on cordial terms, but something happened that caused conflict.
She has no idea why this happened and only knows Uncle Peeper to be a loving and generous man.
“He was a kind, loving father, uncle, son, brother. Everybody knew him, everybody knew Uncle Peeper. Every time he came around, it was always joy, excitement, have you laughing.”
The niece agrees with Sheriff Doak – the neighborhood is usually quiet.
“This is a first,” she said. “The whole 24 years I’ve been living, this is the first.”
Investigators have not released a motive in the shooting, but say they’re exploring the possibility of it being personal or drug-related.
Wednesday, residents were urged to stay in their homes, and buses taking kids home from school were told to stop their routes and take the students to a safe place.
Wayne Banner is a sophomore at Ravenna High School, who says he was in drama class when the ordeal began.
He heard the principal over a loud speaker saying that lockdown was in effect for the entire school. Banner says that he and his classmates hid in dressing rooms in the dark, crying and terrified.
“Shots had been fired down by the stadium, and we were all crying and we weren’t sure what to do because we didn’t know if we were going to make it out alive or what, so we were all just really scared.”
Police cleared the area and lifted the lockdown by 3 p.m. Wednesday. At that time, buses resumed dropping students off at their homes and police escorted students and staff to their cars.
“It really makes me afraid for my life,” Banner said.
Police have been in contact with Calhoun’s family, and hope that close family or friends will turn him in if he doesn’t turn himself in.

If you see him, police say you should not engage him directly, as he is considered armed and extremely dangerous.
