From mercurynews.com:
SAN JOSE — Four inmates escaped from Santa Clara County’s Main Jail on Thanksgiving Eve by sawing through the steel bars of a second-floor window and using a makeshift rope to rappel to the ground below, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Correctional deputies found out about the jailbreak at 11:08 p.m. Wednesday and immediately nabbed two of the inmates just outside the facility at 150 W. Hedding St. The Sheriff’s Office late Thursday was still searching for the other two, who were identified as Rogelio Chavez, 33, of San Jose, and Laron Campbell, 26, of Palo Alto.
San Jose and Sunnyvale police officers joined sheriff’s deputies in a manhunt that initially focused on the immediate area around the jail. The effort, however, was called off at 9:15 a.m. Thursday when surveillance footage surfaced showing the men outside the police perimeter.
Sgt. Richard Glennon said the Sheriff’s Office was working around the clock with other Bay Area and federal law enforcement agencies to find Chavez and Campbell, but it is “still seeking help from the public … in continuing to keep these faces known to the community.”
Both inmates have extensive rap sheets and pose a threat to public safety, Glennon said.
“Someone who is willing to cut through bars to break out of jail, they know they’re being pursued by law enforcement,” he said. “The public should be aware and not try to apprehend them.”
Chavez was booked in August on charges that include burglary, extortion, false imprisonment, resisting arrest and firearms violations. Campbell was booked in February 2015 on charges that include robbery, false imprisonment, criminal threats and firearms violations.
The Sheriff’s Office described Chavez as Latino, 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds. He also has a distinctive tattoo above and below his left eye. Campbell was described as black, 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds. Both men were last seen wearing orange and gray jail garb.
The four inmates escaped from a 16-man cell on the second floor of the oldest part of the jail, which was built in the 1950s. It wasn’t immediately clear what they used to saw through two steel bars on a window overlooking a narrow courtyard, but they used a rope made out of bedding and clothing to reach the ground below, Glennon said.
“To complete that task would require some planning for sure,” Glennon said about the jailbreak.
Two of the inmates were nabbed right away when a deputy patrolling the perimeter of the jail saw movement in the shadows and noticed the makeshift rope, Glennon said. The names of those inmates were not released.
Glennon said there are no security cameras in the part of the jail where the inmates made their escape.
The manhunt did not impact the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot, which started early Thursday morning in downtown San Jose.
The Sheriff’s Office advises anyone who spots Chavez or Campbell to use “extreme caution” and immediately call 911. Anyone with information about the case also can contact the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office at 408-808-4500 or its anonymous tip line at 408-808-4431.
