Law enforcement officers continue to search for an Elizabethton, Tennessee, man, who was last seen in Bristol, after he was charged with murder in the death of his stepson.
On Tuesday, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced that it had added Demetrius Deshawn Covington, 28, to its Top 10 Most Wanted List. The Elizabethton Police Department has charged Covington with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a 3-year-old child.
On Nov. 18, Elizabethton Police began an investigation into a suspicious injury of a child. Officers received a 911 call informing them that the child’s mother had the child in a vehicle and was stopped on Broad Street in Elizabethton and was performing CPR on the child, according to a written statement from Elizabethton Police.
Officers and EMS personnel arrived and transported the child to a local hospital.
Police said the investigation revealed that Covington, also known as Demetrius Somerville, had called the child’s mother at her place of employment stating that the child was injured and requested that she come home. The woman arrived at the home and reported that the child was having difficulty breathing, so she decided to take him to the emergency room. While en route to the hospital, the child’s condition worsened, at which time she called 911 for help.
The child was taken to the hospital by EMS and was found to have numerous injuries, police said. The boy died on Tuesday and the murder charge was filed.
Police said Covington left the residence after the mother departed for the hospital and has not been heard from since.
“We previously received information that he was in the Bristol area but we are not sure of his current whereabouts,” said Elizabethton Police Capt. Joy Shoun.
The man was last seen in Bristol on Sunday.
Police said they have received some tips regarding Covington's whereabouts, but he has not been located.
Covington was last seen driving a 2006 white Chevrolet Impala with Tennessee tag Z31-82E. The TBI said Covington is a known member of the Bloods street gang and he should be considered armed and dangerous.
Covington, 28, is an African-American man who stands 5 foot 7 inches tall and weighs approximately 185 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.
Anyone with information about his whereabouts should contact the TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND. There is a $1,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. The U.S. Marshals Service is also assisting in the search and is offering a $2,500 reward for information. Individuals with information can also contact local police.
