CHALMETTE, La. —
Two people are being sought after a man was shot and killed Tuesday night in Chalmette, St. Bernard Parish authorities said.
Keith Guerra, 30, was identified as the victim in the shooting. He previously lived in Chalmette, but had recently moved to New Orleans, according to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office.
The shooting was reported just before 7:30 p.m. on Palmisano Boulevard near the intersection of Missouri Street. Deputies said Guerra was found with a gunshot wound to his chest. A second man, a passenger in the victim's vehicle, suffered minor injuries.
Investigators believe that Guerra was shot by one of the two men who rear-ended his silver Chevrolet Impala, got out and argued with Guerra and his passenger. The gunman shot Guerra and left the area with his vehicle and the vehicle that hit Guerra, officials said.
Guerra was found by an off-duty deputy who lives in the area and who heard two gunshots. The deputy stayed with Guerra who died at the scene.
"This wasn't random and the assailants may have followed Guerra and the passenger from New Orleans or knew where they were going," SBPSO Col. John Doran said in a news release.
The Sheriff's Office said Guerra's passenger was using illicit drugs before he was picked up in New Orleans East. The unidentified passenger called Guerra for a ride back to Chalmette, where the passenger lives with this father.
Investigators have not released descriptions of the two men being sought for the murder. It is believed that they were in a light-colored SUV, possibly a Ford model, at the time of the shooting.
Guerra's Chevrolet Impala has not been located. Officials said Tuesday night's incident was the first homicide in St. Bernard Parish of 2015.
Anyone with information about the investigation is asked to call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
