SIOUX CITY, Iowa
It's been nearly three months since a woman was murdered on the Missouri River, the case still unsolved.
Alicia Hummel, 29, was killed June 1 while fishing and enjoying a day on the river at the Myron Grove Landing near Meckling, South Dakota
Clay County Sheriff Andy Howe says Hummel's murder has been the main focus of their department all summer long, stretching their resources and others' to check out every possible lead in the case. Howe says Hummel's body was found at the Myron Grove boat landing in rural Clay County with blunt force trauma to her head and incise wounds on her neck. Howe says Hummel died, however, from drowning.
Sheriff Howe says they're continuing to investigate every lead and every tip that comes in to the office, hoping to find answers. He says things are moving along, but not on the pace he'd like to be seeing.
"This late in the game, we'd really hoped we'd have resolution by now and I'm optimistic that we will. We've got a pretty good lead and we're following up on that," said Andy Howe, Clay County Sheriff.
As investigators work to solve the case, family and friends of Alicia are searching for answers as to what happened the day she was killed.
"It scares me that there isn't answers, we don't have answers and that there may never be answers," said Bethany Svacina, a longtime friend of Alicia Hummel.
Bethany Svacina, a longtime friend of Alicia Hummel's, says its hard to grieve for Alicia without being able to put to rest what happened the day she died.
Sunday, friends and family came out in force to the Abu Bekr Shrine in Sioux City to remember Alicia and to help raise money to cover costs associated with her death.
"It gives me goose bumps thinking about how many people are here and how much support we have. It's an overwhelming feeling," Svacina said.
"Looking around and seeing all the people she's touched and all the lives she's touched, you don't realize that until somebody's gone," Folkers said.
Alicia's little sister, Erica Folkers, says Alicia was kind and loving. She says they were finally starting to grow close as sisters, able to talk and bond at a deep level for the first time.
"I miss that and I'm never going to have that again. I'll just have pictures now. But my sister was a strong woman," said Erica Folkers, Alicia's sister.
Erica says like many others at Sunday's benefit, she loves and misses Alicia. Organizers say they hope the event raises money but also awareness about what happened to Alicia, hoping one day they can find closure and finally lay her spirit to rest.
Event organizers say Sunday's benefit brought in more than $6,000. All the money from the benefit will go toward helping the family pay for funeral and other costs associated with Alicia's death.
Anyone with any information as to what happened the day Alicia Hummel was killed is being asked to contact the Clay County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Howe says there is no detail too small and he's encouraging everyone to come forward. Businesses interested in helping set up a reward for information in Hummel's murder can contact Sheriff Howe or the Clay County Sheriff's Department.

Thoughts? As the articles note even though Alicia's horrific murder occurred in South Dakota, she was a resident of Sioux City, Iowa. There's obviously never a good time to get murdered but it's especially tragic when it happens during a day where you're supposed to have a relaxing and quiet time fishing and enjoying the weather. I hope the scumbag that killed her is apprehended sooner rather than later.
