Joseph Dudley Ashley is wanted for murdering his wife and simply walking out of a courthouse due to a mix up.
Ashley presented himself as a self-employed loan broker working in New Mexico. At the time, he was being investigated for defrauding a bank of $10,000, when his wife was reported missing. Police say Ashley poisoned his wife, placed her nude body in a foot locker, and buried it in a pit near their house. He left their three children with a babysitter, stating his wife left due to a death in the family. He then fled to Texas to live with an amateur female country-western singer. Investigators found the body, and four months later, Ashley was arrested. He pled no contest to the murder 7 1/2 to 25 years in prison.
At the time, Ashley was also on parole regarding his defrauding the bank in Oklahoma. In 1980, he was transferred to Oklahoma to answer questions as to whether or not he had repaid the money he defrauded, and was released on bond. He stayed in Oklahoma, and appeared in court months later to show proof he had repaid the money. The judge decided not to revoke his parole, and Ashley walked out. By the time Oklahoma realized their mistake, he was long gone.
What do you guys think? Ashley's one of those fugitives you'd think would be easy to catch (very overweight, wears his hair like Elvis), but has still eluded authorities for decades. After one airing on AMW, a female friend of his sent more recent pictures of him. I'm not sure when the last time he was profiled was, but had they stayed on him, he may have one day been caught.
