FBI Join Search for John Wheeler's Killer
The Newark, Del., Police Department is currently investigating the murder of a U.S. Military expert whose corpse was discovered in the Cherry Island Landfill.
John Parson Wheeler III, 66, served in Vietnam as an Army staff officer and eventually became the chairman of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. He is also known for his work in the Reagan and both Bush administrations. Moreover, he is a notable author and was the CEO of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
Around 9:56 a.m. on New Year’s Eve, Newark Police received information that Delaware waste management employees had unveiled a corpse. The shocking discovery occurred while unloading a refuse truck in the Cherry Island Landfill. The Delaware Medical Examiner's Office declared the death a homicide. The autopsy also revealed that John's body was not in the Dumpster, nor the garbage truck, for a long period of time. Newark detectives quickly pulled the truck's garbage route and learned that the truck's first stop was scheduled at 4:20 a.m. on Dec. 31, 2010.
Detectives have created a list of locations along the garbage truck's route and are asking the public to report any suspicious activity that may have occurred. The list of locations is as follows: WSFS Bank, College Square; Newark Library, Library Avenue; Gardens of White Chapel, White Chapel Drive; Hudson State Service Center, Ogletown Road; Newark Toyota, Marrows Road; McDonald's, East Main Street; Attila Wings, East Main Street; Newark Emergency Center, East Main Street; Bing's Bakery, East Main Street; Goodwill, Newark Shopping Center.
While detectives strive to locate an actual crime scene, they are also working to create a timeline for John prior to his death. John's whereabouts from Dec. 28 until his death are, for the most part, unknown.
John was briefly captured on a security camera alive inside the Nemours Building, on 10th and Orange Streets in Wilmington, DE. Reports from witnesses at the scene claim John looked bewildered and confused. In the surveillance video--which was recorded on Dec 29 just before 7 p.m.--John is seen holding his right shoe in his left hand as he walks around barefoot, looking for a stolen briefcase and his car.
As it turns out, John's car wasn't even parked in that lot. Around 8:30 p.m. the very next day, John was once again captured on surveillance video; however, this time he was in a different parking lot altogether. Authorities have not yet made this video public.
On Jan. 7, police announced that they have new video showing John leaving the Nemours building through its 11th Street exit. Wearing dark-colored pants and a navy hooded sweatshirt, John walks through the Hotel DuPont walet parking area southeast, crossing over Market Street. At 8:42 p.m., he's seen on the west sidewalk of 11th Street. Police need your tips regarding where he was after that.
Newark police are now collaborating with the FBI. Baltimore FBI field office spokesman Rick Wolf stated that the Bureau is now involved because of Wheeler's former affiliation with the Air Force.
The public needs to come forward in order to spur this investigation.

Thoughts? John Wheeler's death was profiled as a web-exclusive case on America's Most Wanted's old website. Because of his high profile, his case has received a lot of publicity elsewhere. I also want to say there are a lot of conspiracy theories that Wheeler's death somehow has something to do with 9/11, Dick Cheney operatives likely killed him, etc...
It's important to stress those are just rumors and hearsay, regardless of whether a murder victim worked for a Democratic or Republican administration, I would say the same thing.
As a matter of fact, some Reddit posters have theorized that Wheeler's murder has to do with a long-running feud with his neighbors:
