(Above photo credit: NBC Miami) Federal authorities are seeking the public’s help in identifying a man impersonating a U.S. Marshal in Ft. Myers. Authorities say a white or Hispanic male entered the Suncoast Credit Union Tuesday, located at 4491 Underwood Drive in Fort Myers. According to the U.S. Marshals Service, the man was wearing a bulletproof vest, badge, and had a holstered firearm on his hip. He identified himself as a U.S. Marshal and asked the staff a series of strange questions. The suspect spoke with a New York accent. Authorities say the man may be from the Miami, Ft. Lauderdale or West Palm Beach area. The male was also reported to have been inside the Check Cashing Store located at 4901 Palm Beach Boulevard in Fort Myers. Anyone who can help identify the man is urged to contact Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS(8477) or the Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers office at (305) 471-TIPS.www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/Authorities-Seek-Man-Impersonating-US-Marshall-in-South-Florida-393745971.htmlThoughts? According to other reports there have been no tips on this case which has led to belief this impostor is not from the Fort Myers area. As a native New Yorker, I'm also partially offended at the belief he's from New York just because of his accent LOL. In all seriousness, this is a concerning matter, it's scary enough to impersonate a cop, but now impersonating a federal agent takes this to a new level. Hopefully he's caught soon because my fear is you don't dress up like that and ask strange questions if you're not planning something. The Marshals are now offering a $2,500 reward for information. This is in addition to the $1,000 reward from crime stoppers. What is scary here is there was a recent sexual assault on a woman in nearby Bonita Springs where the man posed a police officer and wore a tactical vest, but authorities are not commenting on that investigation or if there is any connection. Update (this story gets weirder and weirder): The U.S. Marshals filed a criminal charge of impersonating a federal law enforcement officer Thursday against a man they're seeking who is caught on video trying to infiltrate two Fort Myers businesses under the guise of official U.S. Marshals and FBI operations. On September 16, the unidentified man walked into a Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union in Fort Myers and said he was “Agent John McClane” – yes, that's the name of the character in the movie "Die Hard" – and told clerks that he wanted to discuss matters of “national security.” The man warned them of impending robberies, according to federal court records. The man asked for the names of all the employees and how much money they had on hand. With a gun holstered to his side, he wore a badge, gloves and a black tactical vest with the words “Police U.S. Marshals” on the back, according to security footage first reviewed by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, then passed to the U.S. Marshals. The clerks said the man’s badge looked fake and then he left. Five minutes later, he walked into a check cashing store down the street and repeated the routine. Deputy U.S. Marshal Ebenezer Paikai, who’s leading the investigation, said in the complaint that he doesn’t recognize the man, nor would any protocol or investigation call for walking through the front door in tactical gear and identifying yourself as a federal agent. Anyone with information on the identity and whereabouts of the suspect is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477). All callers will remain anonymous and will be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000 from Crime Stoppers and $2,500 from the U.S. Marshals Service.
