(Above: Zavala, age-progressed sketch, photo credit: CBS Dallas/Fort Worth) From CBS Dallas/Fort Worth: LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (CBSDFW.COM) – A man wanted for a Jan 7, 1994 murder in Las Cruces, New Mexico is believed to be living with family near Arlington or in Mexico. On Thursday, Las Cruces District Attorney Mark D’Antonio released a new image of the man wanted for killing 21-year-old Ricardo Soria. According to investigators, Gregorio Zavala, then 19, shot Soria in the head at point-blank range. The incident happened during a house party in Las Cruces. According to witnesses, Soria was trying to break up a fight when Zavala shot and killed him. Zavala is 6 feet tall and had a thin build at the time of the murder. Authorities believe he’s been using the name Gregorio Santillan or Jose Lopez. The newest image, an age-progression composite sketch, was created by the FBI’s Operational Projects Unit and commissioned by the 3rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office. Anyone with information is urged to contact the authorities or the district attorney’s cold case investigator Richard Post at 575-524-6370.dfw.cbslocal.com/2016/09/15/man-wanted-for-1994-murder-could-be-in-north-texas/Thoughts? I only could find the age-progressed sketch online and not what Zavala looked like at 19, but hopefully it's accurate enough. Even if there was no photo at all, there's always someone who knows where a fugitive is hiding. I'm sure someone out there be it in Arlington or Mexico knows where Zavala is hiding, and it's up to that person to make that call. There seems to be a moral-issue in these argument types of cases where people are killed for doing the right thing in trying to break up a dispute. If Ricardo didn't try to break up the dispute, then chances are Gregorio wouldn't have shot him to death. Gregorio should have the maturity to first not have gotten involved in the dispute, and second to not have shot someone to death who was trying to resolve the issue. Unfortunately there are so many people like Gregorio Zavala out there who won't change their behaviour and it's sad because actions like this may encourage people not to do the right thing.

I have not been able to find any recent updates online about this case. As far as I can tell, Zavala is still at large as of this update (7/29/2018) since I haven't found anything online suggesting otherwise. However, if anyone has any updates/proof-of-updates one way or the other, they are always more than welcome to let us know.

Gregorio Zavala has pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to seven years imprisonment, including the one year he's already served in custody. The reason for this was that while Gregorio was a fugitive, evidence from Ricardo Soria's autopsy file was lost in a fire in Albuquerque. As a result, Gregorio will presumably be back on the streets in 2025. www.kvia.com/news/new-mexico/killer-sentenced-in-25-year-murder-case-but-las-cruces-family-still-mourns/1113606603Small note, just like in unsolved murder cases, I feel it's really important to find these fugitive murder suspects sooner than later so that evidence doesn't get misplaced and/or destroyed. This may happen more often than we think unfortunately.

He just got lucky by some pure chance, at the public's expense!
