(Above photo credit: Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department website) AMW aired the murder of 9-year old Hector Perez in 2002 and 2003. No suspects to date have ever been identified in this tragic case. On Oct 9, 2001, Hector was playing with his siblings and other neighborhood kids at Las Vegas's Maslow Park. Right before 9PM, a car was observed slowly driving in the parking lot and then leaving. 20 minutes later, the same car returned with four people inside. Someone in the vehicle then fired three shots at the group who had moved to the bleachers near a baseball diamond. Hector Perez was shot once in the chest and died shortly after, even after one of the kids tried to administer CPR. Motives in this case included gang initiation, mistaken identity or another neighborhood kid was the intended target. It should be noted that the boy who administered CPR had a shot fired into his house a few weeks after Hector was murdered. Police never determined if that was connected, although to me it's likely that it was connected. Thoughts? I have a hard time believing the mistaken identity part for Hector himself. I mean he clearly looks 9-years old and not older for his age and I can't imagine someone wanting to deliberately shoot him. But mistaken identity for another older child in the group I can absolutely buy.
I am curious how old that boy who administered CPR is since I also think there is a high likelihood of connection there. I get a feeling that was who the intended target was. Sorry for asking so many questions but also curious if that boy had an older brother who possibly could have had a beef with someone.
It is also entirely possible someone was shooting at another older boy (meaning it wasn't mistaken identity) and hit Hector instead. As we've seen this year and in AMW's history (see Jahbir & Alfonso Fowle) too often children are caught in the line of gunfire.

What's interesting is that when the case was profiled, one of the detectives on the case said they didn't believe any of the older kids had done anything to make them a target. If I'm remembering things correctly, she said they couldn't find evidence that Hector's friends were involved in anything illegal. Of course, she could have just been saying that to the media while privately they were doing something else, but you never know.
I didn't realize the murder happened at 9 p.m. though. The way the story was filmed it seemed like the shooting happened around 4:30-5 p.m. I don't think AMW ever mentioned that on either of the profiles.
As an interesting note, one of the kids in the story said Hector's bike had been stolen the day before the murder. It's probably just a coincidence, but an odd one nonetheless.
