ELIZABETH, N.J. — A reputed gang member has been indicted in connection with a northern New Jersey street shooting that left a 5-year-old boy seriously injured.
Eighteen-year-old Jose Rodriguez of North Plainfield faces attempted murder and weapons charges in the indictment handed up Friday by a Union County grand jury.
Prosecutors say Rodriguez was walking with friends in January when they encountered members of a rival gang on a Plainfield street.
Rodriguez allegedly followed the other group and fired several shots from a .22-caliber handgun. None of the other gang members was struck, but a stray bullet hit the boy as he walked home from school with his mother.
The child was hospitalized for several weeks but has since recovered from his wounds.
