From AL.Com:
The U.S. Marshals' Gulf Coast Regional Task Force has now taken over the lead in the search for an "armed and dangerous" inmate who escaped from the Greene County Jail.
U.S. Marshal Marty Keely announced a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of Eric Washington. The 23-year-old inmate overpowered Greene County jailers Tuesday night and took their keys before fleeing on foot. He is believed to be armed with shank.
A massive manhunt was immediately launched and continued today. It is the second widespread manhunt for Washington in just over 13 months - last year he fired on a Greene County deputy who responded to a domestic dispute involving Washington and a woman.
Today, Greene County schools were put on lockdown as tracking dogs and helicopters scoured the county for Washington.
Washington on June 30 was convicted of second-degree assault and discharging a gun into an occupied vehicle. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Authorities at the time said that incident began with a domestic violence dispute between Washington and a woman.
Washington fired several shot into the windshield of a Greened County deputy who responded to the original call. The officer was hurt by broken glass, but not hit by any of the bullets. Washington and the woman fled Greene County and a cross-county, multi-agency hunt was launched.
An off-duty Brookwood police officer spotted the couple's car on Interstate 20/59 and began following it at a distance, waiting for backup. The couple stopped at a gas station in Woodstock in Bibb County, where they were arrested without incident.
The woman was not charged and cooperated with lawmen. Initially, Washington was charged with kidnapping, but he was acquitted on that charge.
Washington was last seen wearing black shorts and no shirt. Authorities said today that anyone helping Washington during his time on the run will be vigorously prosecuted.
Anyone who has information on Washington's whereabouts is asked to call the U.S. Marshals Service at 1-877-926-8332 or 877wanted2.
