Marin homicide investigators have identified a Marin City man as the suspect in a fatal shooting there earlier this month.
Joseph Montgomery, also known as Jojo or Joseph Foster, was implicated by community witnesses in Marin City, sheriff’s Lt. Jamie Scardina said Thursday. Investigators are obtaining a warrant for his arrest.
The shooting occurred at about 1 a.m. May 10 outside an apartment at 79 Cole Drive. Jermaine Kennedy, 34, a former Marin City resident who had more recently lived in Vallejo and Richmond, suffered gunshots to the chest and abdomen and was pronounced dead at Marin General Hospital.
The motive is under investigation. Scardina said Montgomery and Kennedy had a history of animosity.
Detectives have not recovered the gun used in the homicide.
Montgomery, 34, has family in Marin City, San Jose, Vallejo and Santa Rosa, the sheriff’s department said. He is 5-foot-4 and 150 pounds.
The sheriff’s office said Montgomery should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information about the shooting can call the investigations unit at 415-473-7265 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 800-222-TIPS. Crime Stoppers callers can be eligible for a cash reward for information leading to a conviction.
Kennedy attended John F. Kennedy High School in Richmond and studied automotive repair at College of Marin, according to his Facebook page. He was engaged.
The murder occurred the same weekend that numerous people were in Marin City for the funeral of another homicide victim. Peter Stanley, a former Marin City resident, was killed on April 26 in Sacramento.
Police said the shooting might have happened during a robbery. Stanley was 39.

Thoughts? It is rather tragic irony that Kennedy was apparently in town for the funeral of a murder to victim only to become one himself. According to other media reports, Montgomery may have asked Kennedy what he was doing in Marin City, although the exact motive is technically unknown despite believed prior animosity.
