Fugitive Profile as of August 24th, 2014 (Based on Michigan State Police website, online articles: Date of Birth: 03/01/1953 Height: 5'7" Weight: 154 lbs. Hair Color: Brown Eye Color: Brown Gender: Male Race: White Scars/Marks: Circular burn scar on left elbow; "LCI" burned into upper left arm Who to call if you've seen him: Michigan State Police Tip Line: 1-866-638-4847 or Monroe County detectives at (734) 240-7530.John Gentry is wanted for the double murder of his male and female lovers Barbara Gerber and William Veith back in 1983. Gentry was serving time for assault when he met Gerber, the kitchen manager. He convinced her that he was serving time for a bar fight where he was defending a woman, when in reality, he was serving time for crushing the Adam's apple of his male lover. After he was released, he began living with Gerber in her home in Michigan. Gerber had no idea that Gentry was living in Ohio, just across the Ohio/Michigan border, with his male lover William Veith, a 52 year-old coin shop owner. Gentry was spending his time commuting between Ohio and Michigan, living with both Gerber and Veith. By April 1983, the whole charade was over, and police believe either Gerber or Veith found out the truth. In April, Gerber was found stabbed to death and sexually assaulted. Police traveled to Ohio, where Gentry had listed his address at, to talk to him about his girlfriends death. They went to Veith's house, where Gentry listed as his address, and found he wasn't home. When they checked Veith's coin store, they found it locked. Suspicious, they entered the store, where they found Veith's body in the basement. He had been beaten to death with the blunt end of an axe, the axe found nearby. Veith's car, as well as some coins and diamonds, were found missing. Veith's car was found in Indiana, with a road map from Ohio to Chicago, and a cup with Gentry's prints on it. Gentry also sent postcards to a friend from San Diego, and his father from Los Angeles. He was indicted for Veith's murder; four years later, he was indicted for Gerber's murder as well. He was profiled three time from 1990 to 1992, and once in 2005. In 2007, human remains were found near a lake in Kentucky. They had been there for quite some time, and it was determined he died from self-inflicted wounds. Investigators initially believed the remains were that of Gentry's, but tests confirmed it wasn't. What do you guys think? I, for one, am at a loss as to where he could be. If investigators were that certain the dead body was Gentry's, then maybe they believe he killed himself, and just missed his body. Otherwise, I'm out of ideas. Thoughts? If I'm not mistaken didn't even the profile that used to be on amw.com say something along the lines of "he could even be dead." Its very unusual for amw to make a statement like that in a profile.

Yeah, they said that on his brief. They must really believe he's dead if amw put that on his profile. My confusion is with the fact that this guy seemed to get around everywhere. He was living close to the border of Ohio/Michigan, then fled to Indiana, sent postcards from California, and then they believed his body may have been in Kentucky. This guy sounds like a drifter; if that's the case, he could be anywhere.

Since his last postcards were sent from Southern California, then perhaps he fled to Mexico at some point. Aside from that then I too am out of ideas.

I was just about to post on here too and didn't even realize we were referenced LOL. Anyone notice despite him posting less than HeadMarshal and myself, it's always TheCzar's fugitive threads that gets the national headlines? LOL.

With the recent "cold case" additions to the Ten Most Wanted List: (Urbina, Bishop), I think Gentry would be a great add to the list. Think about it: He poses a danger to the general public because his victims were from both genders, and they were extremely violent (Barbara Gerber's throat was slashed, and William Veith was beaten to death with the blunt end of a hatchet). Further, he was a convicted felon at the time of their deaths. This case could use new tips to breathe life into the case, and propelling him onto the Ten Most Wanted List would do that.

I must say maddog I do agree that he deserves an addition (who don’t I want to add lol) but there are so many cold cases across this country that aren’t on the FBI featured fugitives site (Stanley Obas, Joseph Sinnott Edwards, etc) that are deserving and could be considered Dark Horses for the List. Based on his crime, yes there’s justification for an addition, but then you have the possibility of him being dead and his current age is in a moderate area where I’d say probably it could work as it’ll jump start the search for Gentry, but my earliest preference is of someone born in 1963/64. The reason I prefer a younger cold case fugitive take the open slot is because Bishop currently holds one slot who is above 80 years old at the moment, and Yaser Said, Robert Fisher are both At or near 60.

I think though what makes him a particular threat is that he has targeted both men and women, making him particularly dangerous. Plus, he had rigged Gerber's house to explode, and it probably would have if her brother hadn't stumbled on the scene and turned off the gas stove. Even though Gebtry was a drug user and smoker, it sounds like these tips from LA in recent years have some truth to them, as we do know that Gentry favored trans exotic dancers so it's something he has been exposed to in the past.

Then it definitely justifies an addition, Hopefully that is the case that they have been getting solid tips from LA, because it could be the nail in the coffin for Gentry if he’s added to the List.

I think what also makes a great addition for a "cold case" to make the top ten list is if there's new leads. If we hadn't heard much about Gentry recently, I'd disagree about him being on the list despite how horrible the alleged crimes he committed with. However, because of the new leads revealed in the past few years (potentially dressing as a woman, living in L.A., may be alive), I would agree he'd be a good addition to the list as that one "cold case" slot you take a chance on.
(I'm also biased because the article about the potential news leads mentioned our site, but that's besides the point lol).

"Criminally Listed" YouTube profile on Fugitives who seemingly disappeared into thin air, part 2. John Kelly Gentry along with Robert Fisher are two of the cases listed previously featured on AMW. Who knows? Maybe this new clip might generate new leads. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFyhDViDAZQ&t=1s

Gentry obviously still at large as of this update (7/26/2018) since this is a high-profile case that would make headlines if there was ever a resolution. Just wanted to mention didn't get a chance to watch it and not sure if we knew this before but Gentry's AMW re-enactment is actually available on YouTube! m.youtube.com/watch?v=X4VzOqMtAH4#

I do agree with my fellow forum members that John Gentry would be a perfect candidate for the Top Ten List, since it’s a person with a Jekyll & Hyde type of character here.
