It sounds similar to the Kyron Horman case in terms of how the alleged abduction happened (every other aspect of the case is probably different). Michael was 16 at the time so he was old enough to somewhat fight back- if he was abducted- that person had a weapon of some sort.

It really does now that you mention this, the only explanation is he was taken at gunpoint and goodness knows what may have happened.
This case seems a bit off from the normal missing persons cases when a 16 year old male disappears under suspicious circumstances, they found his bag and half of his clarinet and the question I have is where is the other half of his clarinet? It hasn't been said that it was recovered.
Also I may be saying this as an assumption, but it seemed Michael was your average good student, playing clarinet and dedicated to learning, and given that 1989 was the same year Jacob Wetterling disappeared perhaps there could a weird connection we don't know?

What is also odd here is Michael is a bit older than the usual target for a sexual predator although perhaps he looked young for his age. (Then again I remember when I was around 16 and a guy asked me if I wanted a ride home at the bus stop- thank goodness I was an AMW viewer even back then and said no!). So for the age and location factor (out west as opposed to Mid/Northwest), I don't believe this is connected to Jacob Wetterling case.
Not saying this is the case with Michael but taking him out of the equation, if I hear about a teenage boy and a bag being found near a beach and not showing up for school, I hate to say it, but I would think about the possibility of a suicide.
However, Michael from the description at least sounded like a normal and relatively happy student.
