LOUISVILLE, Ky. —A Louisville police officer shot over the weekend is out of the hospital but the man police have identified as the shooter remains on the loose.
Investigators believed they were close to tracking down Jacquan Crowley, 22.
Police spent more than seven hours outside the home in the 2500 block of West Chestnut Street Monday using megaphones, pleading with Crowley to come out and turn himself in peacefully.
According to LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell, police were acting on a tip.
A man claiming to be Crowley's uncle spoke to WLKY News and said that Crowley wanted to turn himself in.
The SWAT team was set up all afternoon and members of the U.S. Marshals Service were also at the scene.
It was just after 7 p.m. when officers cleared the Chestnut Street home they'd been watching.
Knowing Crowley was likely armed, LMPD admitted they were in no rush.
"In these situations, we always like to say that time is on our side. We have experts here looking at the situation to make sure that we're covering all the bases," Mitchell said.
Crowley has been on the run since Saturday night, when police said he shot Officer Kyle Carroll in the chest just after 11 p.m. in Louisville's Russell neighborhood.
Carroll was released from the hospital Monday afternoon and is continuing his recovery at home.
Neighbor Yolanda Moore witnessed both scenes, calling the past few days terrifying.
"This is our first time coming back outside. I thought it was done and over with. No, it's still going on," Moore said.
The scene on Monday was initially labeled a standoff. Throughout the afternoon, loud booms could be heard.
But after using K-9 units and making their way inside the home, Crowley was nowhere to be found.
Police said Crowley is considered very dangerous.
"Our primary goal is to find this individual, place him behind bars and let the judicial system take its course from there," Mitchell said.
Police said Carroll was making his regular patrol through the neighborhood when he saw a man he recognized walking near 23rd and Magazine streets.
They said Carroll had arrested Crowley in the past.
"The officer made a U-turn and came back towards the man. At that point, the man took off running," LMPD Chief Steve Conrad said during a media briefing.
After a short chase, police said Crowley pulled out a gun, shot the officer and took off running. Carroll was wearing a bulletproof vest.
LMPD thanked the community for their thoughts and prayers during what they called "a trying time."
Anyone with information on Crowley's whereabouts is asked to call the anonymous tip line at (502) 574-LMPD.
