From NJ.COM:
ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP — There has not been a suspect or a known motive in the mysterious murder of a high-profile supermarket executive more than 21 years ago.
Yet there has always been some optimism that the unsolved murder of Robert Wunderle would one day see closure, based on clues at the scene.
"I’m still hopeful," said Sue Wunderle, his widow. "Maybe not to the high level that I was when it first happened, but you have to stay hopeful."
It was Nov. 16, 1989, when Wunderle, a 45-year-old husband and father of two from Westfield, was found in a drainage ditch near Rockaway. He had been shot once in the head and once in the heart, execution-style, according to authorities. He was found still wearing his business suit and raincoat.
Wunderle was the vice president of economics at Supermarkets General Corp. in Woodbridge, now known as Pathmark Stores. His duties included the handling of government, community, press and trade relations and he participated in labor negotiations with unions that served New Jersey’s supermarket industry. In his work, authorities said Wunderle would occasionally have to deal with members of organized crime and have theorized in the past that his killing was a mob hit.
All Sue Wunderle knows is that she last saw her husband on the morning of Nov. 15. On his way out the door, he left her a note saying he would be staying at the LaGuardia Marriott Hotel in Queens, N.Y., for a two-day meeting. Authorities learned after his body was found that Wunderle never had any scheduled meetings at the hotel and had not reserved a room there.
The last person to see Wunderle alive was a co-worker, who saw him leave his Woodbridge office at around 8:45 p.m. on Nov. 15. Two minutes later, according to phone records, he placed a call to one of his sons on his mobile phone.
"You come up with some of your own theories or ideas on what might have happened, but you just don’t know," said Sue Wunderle, 66, who still lives in Westfield.
Two months after his death, Wunderle’s leased car was located in a Manhattan park-and-lock garage near the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel. According to garage records, the car stamped in at 12:12 a.m. on Nov. 16. Investigators had turned their attention to that 3-1/2 hour span, but came up with no leads. However, they also found that the interior of Wunderle’s car was splattered with blood and the fingerprints of either a person or persons. For years, authorities attempted to link the prints to someone, but came up empty.

Thoughts? The above article is from 5 years ago so it's now been 26 years, and soon to be 27 years that this case has been unsolved. Obviously, a mob hit has been theorized. I think this murder was obviously targeted though and it could have been a simple robbery plot by a person or persons without mob connections but knew of Wunderle's high-profile job.
