(Above photo credit: Napa Valley Register website) Fugitive Profile as of August 24th, 2014 (Based on 2013 amw.com archive, internet research): Sex: Male Race: White Current Age: 72 Height: 6'2" Weight: 165 - 175 lbs. Other Phys. Characteristics: Cops say Eder probably still has several moles on his cheeks and left eye. They say he has sunken eyes and hollow cheekbones. Location information: Cops say Eder may be working as a lab technician. They say he is skilled with knives and woodwork. He is very good at making cabinets. Last Seen: El Cajon , CA Who to call if you've seem him: Cold Case Homicide Unit of the El Cajon Police Department. coldhomicideunit@ci.elcajon.ca.us or 619-441-5530.Carl Alfred Eder is one of the longest-running AMW fugitives (if you count him being on the run since he broke out of prison) and one of the more interesting cases. AMW aired his case between 1991 and 2012, profiled him on Final Justice, put him on the original Most Wanted list in the mid 90s and added him to the 2003 Playing Card set. I bring this case up because he was recently featured on fugitive.com which mainly features cases out of Northern California along with some other ones. Back all the way in 1958, 16-year old Carl Eder was a hitchhiker in El Cajon, California when a man named Thomas Pendergest picked him up and gave him a place to stay at his family's home. That turned out to be beyond disastrous because six weeks later, Eder killed Thomas's wife and killed and disemboweled their four young children. He was sentenced to life imprisonment but by 1974, he was only kept in a minimum-security prison. He easily escaped from custody and left a note saying he was tired of prison. There have been updates on this case over the past several decades. An unidentified body found at the Pendergest property after Eder escaped from prison turned out not to be Eder according to amw.com. Then on the 2012 AMW Series Finale, they updated his story to say that Eder had ties to the Symbionese Liberation Army shortly after he escaped (The same group Kathleen Soliah was associated with). Aside from ties to extreme left-wing groups, Eder also had ties to motorcycle gangs. An informant said that Eder had threatened the life of then-president Gerald Ford. One theory is that Eder was killed because of his violent rhetoric. However if that did happen then no body was ever identified. He had ties to California, New York, Kansas, Latin America, Canada and even Germany. He had experience as a cabinet maker, wood carver and lab technician. He was last seen in 1976 in Napa County, California. An interesting thing to note is that prior to his 1958 arrest he had made trips to Tijuana, Mexico to obtain false identification. It is believed that he had assistance in fleeing to Central or South America. So the big question, where is Carl Alfred Eder? www.fugitive.com/2013/05/20/carl-alfred-eder-wanted-for-50-years-for-murder-of-woman-and-her-four-children/napavalleyregister.com/star/news/local/authorities-renew-search-for-prison-escapee/article_fd936830-553d-11e2-a5ad-001a4bcf887a.htmlwww.findthemissing.org/en/cases/show/14880Admin Note: If you have any news-related updates on this case, please contact us here: amwfans.com/thread/1662/website-contact-form

It's hard for a fugitive accused of what Eder is accused of to be underrated, but somehow his name doesn't seem to have the recognition of some other notorious AMW cold cases.
There was also a lead about him possibly being given a speeding ticket in California in the 80's mentioned in his last airing. But you and I agree we don't know how seriously to take that lead.

This is definitely a case I feel has been swept under the rug, it never got much media attention. I'm surprised someone accused of a crime this brutal and an escape never got much attention from authorities both domestically and internationally.

Well of all the cold case fugitives Eder and Brad Bishop are the only ones who deserve(d) a spot on the top ten list IMO... Of course we all know Bishop is on there and the crime Carl Eder committed is beyond horrific, those are my reasons why if I was head of the FBI I would have added him in a heart beat... Regardless if it was in 1974, 2016 or 2036 for him to go around and kill Thomas's wife and Kill and disemboweled the children and the husband/father Thomas comes home to find his family is dead at the hands of some stranger he picked up and Carl had done him dirty by doing what he did to them it really exhibits the depraved nature of this case, and I'll be honest it will make me feel better if he is added that way I can say yes they tried their best to try to bring this scum to where he belongs, in a prison cell.

I can almost guarantee Eder will not be on the FBI's top 10 list anytime soon- fortunately or unfortunately- because the FBI would never willingly add two cold case fugitives decades later. (There's more than one cold case on there currently only because of Gerena and Godwin if you count them as cold cases not caught since their initial addition). While Eder would have been a decent addition also, I felt there was a reason behind the FBI's addition of Bishop. You don't add a guy wanted for nearly four decades without some decent info on him. It was such a surprising addition there had to be a reason behind it. I believed because they developed new information on where Bishop could possibly be and other leads is why they added him.
Eder, unfortunately, it seems there really haven't been many sightings of him since that possible speeding ticket in California in the 1980's. I think even Bishop had a credible 90's sighting in Switzerland.
But yeah I agree this is a horrible case, and dead or alive, we need to find out what happened to this monster.

I agree with you, but I honestly felt anger when I saw the amw segment on him because of what he did to the kids a poor 2 year old was among them and really I would have added him out of anger lol which I know is pretty dumb but this case has 4 little victims and the suspect had taken advantage of the man who took him in so I feel for Thomas and he was probably devastated or felt like something from out of a nightmare horror movie.

I have always felt this guy could have been caught had their been more publicity over this case. I guess the fact he escaped from prison quite a number of years after committing the crime made him less high-profile.

I would agree he is a very underrated fugitive in the grand scheme of things and had he been profile more earlier on he could have been caught.

I would agree he is a very underrated fugitive in the grand scheme of things and had he been profile more earlier on he could have been caught. Agreed with you, if his age enhanced sketch was published regularly in the local and national news papers as well as shown every day on local and national tv chanels , it would have helped to catch him

Two questions I have:
1) I have been on the AMW cards archived site. It indicated that Eder may possibly be in Germany. Does anyone know the basis for that? I remember earlier in this subject, it was mentioned he has ties there, but I was curious.
2) AMW cards’ website indicated he may be working in a hospital. Was that based off a tip?

While I don't know the answer to your second question, apparently he was said to be a second generation german.
He also was rumored to have ties to several left-wing anti-government groups.

Came across this guy i agree that if he would’ve been given more recognition like John List, Brad Bishop and Robert Fisher he could’ve been easily captured in the way John List was when Frank Bender created the Bust of List in the late 80s for AMW.
I personally think Eder is dead he would be around my grandma age who is still alive but i just think he is either dead or in a nursing home somewhere of course he could be hiding out or just living life like Whitey Bulger did until he was captured but i doubt it.
