(Above photo credit: wtvr.com) From wxii12.com: GALAX, Va. —The Galax community is mourning a mother and her young child found dead in their home. Alyssa Ann Kenny, 28, and her 21-month-old daughter, Anastasia Leighann Alley, were identified as the victims. The deaths are being investigated as a double homicide, Galax police said. The bodies were found on Laurel Street just after noon Thursday. Galax police told WXII 12 News on Friday they have identified a person of interest in the case. “We’re investigating this as capital murder and burglary with intent to commit murder,” said Police Chief Rick Clark. County and state agencies are assisting with the investigation as well. Police have confirmed that the person of interest is not the child's father. WXII 12’s Samina Engel spoke with family members Friday and said they are heartbroken. “I don’t understand why anybody would want to do anything to her. She’s my grandbaby, my baby girl,” said Michael Alley, the grandfather of Anastasia Alley. “She just started talking, saying my name.” An autopsy on the bodies was scheduled for Friday. Clark said the community and his department are shaken by what happened. "We're a different part of Virginia," he said. "People talk to people here. If you notice, people wave to people they don't know. It's a friendly, open, caring, trusting place. And someone's violated that trust and that feeling of safety." Galax police are asking for help in the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 276-236-8101.www.wxii12.com/news/deaths-of-infant-woman-investigated-as-double-homicide-in-galax/38451422Thoughts? This is an understatement but it's an incredibly sad story. I've never heard of Galax, Virginia before but it sounds like a small town and a crime like this is shocking to the core of not just the residents but the police as well. It sounds like there's a person of interest, but I see no news of any arrests as of yet. Let's hope that changes soon, and if anyone has any information they do the right thing and call Galax Police.

There are some very strange things going on with this case. The Galax PD does not seem to be pursuing the perpetrator of this crime with due diligence. It would be very helpful if someone has the ability bring this case to the attention of outside independent investigators. It is a very complex situation involving divorced family members who are at odds with each other and a very closed local community that seems to be hiding something. I spoke with the women who is the paternal grandmother of the child victim. She is divorced from paternal grandfather who lived next door to the victims. His son is the adult victims boyfriend, who was already in prison at the time of the crime. There are several other members of that side of the family that live in the same neighborhood. They seem to be very uncooperative and are providing little information even though the crime occurred in their neighborhood. The Galax police are also acting sort of strange. The paternal grandmother sought to start a reward fund to help solicit any tips. The Galax police told her no. They said if there was a reward offered, too many tips might come in and they would have to investigate all of them and they didn't have time or personnel to do that. Never heard of such a thing. Furthermore the Galax police would not allow the women to place a memorial wreath on the street corner, implying such a display would bring too much attention to the case. In addition, the Galax police failed to protect the integrity of the crime scene for further forensic investigation. The owner of the home ordered the paternal grandmother to immediately remove all personal property from the house and the house was scrubbed clean within just a couple of days after the murder, making any further investigation impossible. The police stated the crime scene appeared to be a burglary gone bad, yet they allowed the crime scene to become contaminated. The burglary aspect does not make a lot of sense. The victim was a single mother with little or no money and few personal assets. She was not a drug user or dealer and there is no indication she would have had anything worth stealing. There are those who believe there was some stress with the boyfriend's family, who lived all around her, which is indicated by comments on the victims Facebook page. There are also comments suggesting domestic abuse was an issue in the family and that the appearance of a burglary could be a cover up for something. The Galax police seem to be ignoring, if not avoiding these issues. It has been a month since the crime and there has been no information provided as to how the case is being investigated. The cause of death has not even been revealed. It is feared by many in our small town that the local police are ignoring, denying, or covering up details of this murder. It is feared that if an independent, outside investigator does not enter this case, justice will never be done. If any one has any ability to bring national media attention to this case, please do it.

Hi kabalaman, Thanks for joining. Those are some disturbing allegations. Might I suggest contacting Crime Watch Daily? They're a syndicated crime show that covers true crime cases and also does some recent unsolved murders and missing person cases. Perhaps they could air the story, and try to interview the parties involved, get everyone's side of the story, the divorced family members, Galax P.D. etc.... crimewatchdaily.com/solve-this-crime/

Doesn't anyone in the Galax Police Department care what disciplines would be taken against them if the killer struck again and some independent source confirmed that the police were corrupt enough to enable that?

There continues to be very little information released about this case. What many locals who are familiar with the PD believe is the investigation was botched from the beginning, either by ignorance and poor training in homicide investigation or worse. It is rumored there are people in the PD related to principles in the case. Absolutely zero information has been released, no updates, no rewards. The local paper seems to be co-operating by never mentioning the case. A two month old unsolved double homicide and people act like nothing ever happened?

I think I saw a lot of news reports (albeit mostly local) when this case first happened. But obviously not everyone reads news articles, so it would be great if this case could be profiled on tv by someone.
I personally don't know much about the Galax Police to judge them myself, but in any case, such a horrific and tragic case like this, if it's true that they said they don't want to raise the reward because it would bring too much attention, then I would have to disagree with them about that. If it's true that they feel they don't have enough personnel to handle a boat load of tips, then the FBI needs to take the case over.
Attention is what will solve this case.
Unfortunately we're just a fan forum for crime tv shows and not officially affiliated with any, so we're limited in what we can do (all we can do is make a posting to our Facebook and Twitter pages which I will do), but I would suggest anyone involved with the case who wants to see it solved, blast it all over social media, contact the crime shows out there (Crime Watch Daily, Dateline, The Hunt with John Walsh doesn't really have a place to submit case requests but I assume messaging CNN on Facebook could be a way to relay a message to producers, 48 Hours, etc...)
