On April 2nd, 1978, a then 31-year old Pedro Duarte Hernandez got into an altercation with a man named Julian Briseno in Joliet, Illinois. According to reports, Briseno struck Hernandez upside the head with a handgun then fled outside the bar. Hernandez went outside, Briseno returned and Hernandez stabbed him approximately 17 times, killing him.
Ironically, the only reason we even have that information in the first place is because of a mistaken identity arrest in 2013. In March of 2013, a New Lenox, Illinois Police Officer pulled over a man named Pedro Hernandez on suspicion of drunk driving.
When they ran his information, police noticed that Hernandez' identifiers resembled those of a man named Pedro Hernandez who was wanted for a 1978 murder in Joliet. When the officer asked why his information would come up, he made a statement about him being involved with a homicide in 1966. However, it was determined that this Pedro Martinez, who was involved in a 1966 murder, was not the same man as Pedro Duarte Hernandez, and he was released.
Thoughts? While I wouldn't say Briseno deserved it, there did seem to be somewhat of a mutual combat involved. However, Briseno had ran away, and Hernandez allegedly sought him out, and then stabbed him repeatedly. That's manslaughter at the very least, if not outright murder (which is the charge). Not to mention, none of this would have happened in the first place had Hernandez not been arguing with Briseno. Hard to say what's happened to a guy not seen since 1978. Besides that mistaken arrest in 2013, it doesn't seem like there has ever been much hope in catching him.
