TIPS: Anyone having information should contact 1-800-THE-LOST or the Ocala Police Department (Florida) - at 1-352-369-7000From The Charley Project: Dorothy and her mother left their Ocala, Florida residence together on July 22, 1976. Her mother took a driving test while Dorothy exchanged a pair of sandals at the J. M. Fields department store. She also planned to buy a birthday present for her brother. Dorothy returned the shoes and was last seen at the mall at approximately 2:00 p.m. that day. Dorothy never met her mother at the designated location they had agreed on and she reported her daughter as missing. Dorothy has never been seen again. A witness reported having seen a girl matching Dorothy's description two hours after she was reported missing. The child was in Nuby's, a convenience store at the intersection of Highway 40 and State Road Highway 314, less than a mile from the Ocala National Forest. with one or two adult males. They purchased sodas and left. The child was shaking and appeared to be very frightened. She and the adult male companion(s) were never identified and law enforcement authorities are not sure if she was in fact Dorothy. Dorothy is the youngest of five children and lived with her family in a mobile home in Citra, Florida in 1976. She was an honor student at Marion Middle School, regularly attended church, and worked at her parents' barbecue. Investigators do not believe she ran away from home, as she was not having any personal problems at the time of her disappearance. There was some speculation at that her disappearance might be linked to the 1975 disappearances of Sheila and Katherine Lyon, but no evidence connecting the cases was discovered. Dorothy's parents divorced in 1981 and her father died ten years later. Her case remains unsolved. Thoughts? Dorothy's disappearance was profiled on the July 28th, 2001 episode of America's Most Wanted. www.charleyproject.org/cases/s/scofield_dorothy.htmlwww.missingkids.org/poster/NCMC/601894/1ocalasmostwanted.com/scofield.htm Admin Note: If you have any news-related updates on this case, please contact us here: amwfans.com/thread/1662/website-contact-form

This is one of my long time cases. I read into this because they said her disappearance may be connected to the Lyons case. The passage of time is very sad and also very scary in a way.

Her resemblance to the Lyons Sisters is jaw-dropping! But I think it is a little too far away to be connected to that case. She seems to have been abducted, but I don't think the alleged sighting was her. Why would someone who has just kidnapped a girl stay in a public place and buy sodas? Weird.

The Lyons and Scofield were both typical 70s pre-teens that didn't know creeps would snatch them up and as far as Sheila Lyon she wore Glasses as with Scofield. These kidnappers or as I call them, creeps they began mostly during this decade with all these disappearances by creeps abducting them. Those girls were part of the generation where you could go anywhere as a kid and stay out till dark but these creeps wrecked it for them and future generations.

Since The Disappearance of the Fort Worth Trio in Texas, The Lyon Sisters in Maryland, and this case are sometimes speculated to be connected, I do see something in Lloyd Welch’s timeline that was released in 2014 when they named him a “Person of Interest” in the Lyons case and it looks like Welch was in Texas in 1974, and was in Maryland starting in March 1975, however Welch was picked up for questioning in April 1975 in relation to the Lyons case and that’s the last known date of his whereabouts on that timeline until he resurfaces again in April 1977 in Takoma Park, Maryland. Looking at this I saw that in November 1977 he provided an address and in March 1980, Welch was in Florida and I’m starting to wonder where was Welch from April 1975 Until April 1977, that’s good 2 years, there’s nothing on his whereabouts during the course of 1976 in his timeline. Welch was a drifter and likely went to Florida during 1976 in my opinion, however it’s not bad that investigators look into this one too. Keep in mind that 1977 mugshot was in Montgomery County, MD in November and he provided an address in Florida in November of that same year. archives.fbi.gov/archives/baltimore/press-releases/2014/person-of-interest-named-in-kidnapping-of-lyon-sisters-others-victims-sought

I could see a resemblance to the suspect in the Scofield disappearance and Welch, that is considering if Welch was clean shaven and didn’t use a headband like in his 1977 Montgomery County, Maryland Mugshot when he was taken in for burglary.

Other than the Nuby’s possible sighting, have there been any solid leads in this case? I’m curious if the cops have developed any solid suspects. I give the Nuby’s sighting a lot of weight. The fact that the child was with two men and seemed “very nervous” just seems off.

I'm trying to see if I can find anything about possible sightings, all I can find is a Reddit thread where they mainly discuss the convenience store sighting where they debate whether the girl was her because it seemed like a brazen thing to do after abducting her- but like someone else pointed out- there were no Amber Alerts back then and news didn't travel as fast. This is pre-Adam Walsh days where missing children were not handled as well as they could be. www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/6y11m3/dorothy_delilah_scofield_disappeared_near_the/
