Lexington, Kentucky authorities are looking for Marquess L. Smith, the last suspect in the murder of an 18-year old Caleb Hallett.
Lexington Police say Hallett was one of two people who were shot inside a car along University Ave at 3:00 am on Saturday January 9th, 2016. Authorities say two men in masks walked up to the car Hallett and another person were in, fired into it, and took off. Caleb died shortly after at nearby UK Hospital. The other person in the car was hit in the hand.
Five individuals, including a three juveniles would be charged in relation to Caleb's death. Although I can't find much online, the apparent motive seems to be robbery since the overall charges for all five defendants include murder, assault and second degree robbery. The two "adults", 21-year old Kenyon J. Hipps, and 18-year old Marquess Smith would become fugitives.
The search for Hipps would end in dramatic fashion. Hipps was in a car in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Dayton, Ohio when two officers on patrol were talking to two males and a female who had gotten out of the vehicle. Suddenly, Hipps, who was sitting in the back seat, shot and killed himself. (It's not said why he shot himself, but my guess is he thought the cops were looking for him and pretty much had him cornered in that parking lot if they were and he didn't want to go to jail.)
Smith, who just turned 19 earlier in this week, is now the only suspect in this who hasn't been reeled in. And his capture would apparently mean a lot to Caleb's loved ones. Over 200 people attended his candlelight vigil. And while Smith's apprehension won't bring Caleb back, it will help his friends and loved ones get one step closer to justice.
Thoughts? I think it's obvious in this case someone or someones are helping Smith hide. Hipps was hiding with people, so why not Smith. He's a technical adult, but at 19, I still consider him almost a teenager. He's not going to go on the run completely by himself.
Also, once again the comments section of news articles leave me depressed, as people are asking what Caleb was doing driving at 3:00 am in the morning, once again, morons blame the victim. The only people responsible for Caleb's death are the people who tried to rob Caleb and/or shot him. One person who commented said the entire reason Caleb was out that late was because his friend was sick and he was driving him home.
