MOUNT PLEASANT, MI — Six days since a Central Michigan University student was killed by a hit-and-run driver, the Michigan State Police say they haven't identified a suspect but are reviewing dozens of tips that came from the community.
Ryan Tsatsos of Macomb, Michigan, was a 2015 De La Salle High School graduate. He was studying criminal justice at CMU, according to his mother, Julie Tsatsos, and was killed two weeks before his 18th birthday.
Tsatsos pushed a young woman out of the way of the vehicle before it stuck and killed him on Crawford between Billabrail and Concourse in Mount Pleasant near CMU's campus, police said. The vehicle then drove off.
Michigan State Police Sgt. Gary Green said on Thursday, Nov. 5, that the agency received what may have been their best lead yet and were busy trying to confirm details.
However, they found the lead to be unrelated to the case, bringing police no closer to the driver who left Tsatsos dead on the side of the road more than a mile from his dorm room, Green said Friday.
A team of three Michigan State Police detectives are focused on the case, Green said, and they are chasing every lead along with "anywhere from 3 to 6 troopers" with assistance from CMU Police, Isabella County Sheriff's Department, the Mount Pleasant Police Department and Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police.
"We've ran down a lot of tips and we've gotten nowhere," Green said Friday morning.
Police had no new information to release to the public, Green said, though they are still asking for tips about anything suspicious, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant.
"Maybe somebody they know is not driving their car anymore or got a new car kind of suddenly," he said. "Maybe somebody they know was up here from out of town."
Police are canvassing neighborhoods, looking at any surveillance videos they can find, and following tips of vehicles with damage, pulling reports to determine if damage was documented before the fatal Nov. 1 crash.
For example, police worked to track down a car caught on surveillance footage at a nearby business that appeared to have damage that could have been caused in the hit-and-run.
Police tracked the plates to an address in Remus and made contact with the owner to inquire about the damage and where the vehicle was on the night of the fatal crash. Investigators determined the damage was unrelated to the hit-and-run, Green said.
CMU police are scouring surveillance footage from campus cameras, Green said, and troopers from the Tri-City Post, Lansing Post and Lakeview Post are also assisting in the investigation.
Green said the young woman who told them Tsatsos pushed her out of the way of the vehicle that struck and killed him "has not wanted to be contacted since" police initially spoke with her.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for useful information in the case and can be reached at 800-422-JAIL (5245).
Anyone with information about the crash or driver and vehicle involved may also call the Michigan State Police Mount Pleasant Post at 989-773-5951 or the anonymous tip line at 877-616-4677.
Police originally described the suspect vehicle as an older, dark 4-door vehicle.

Thoughts? This case is even more tragic because it turns out Ryan's brother was actually killed a car crash three months earlier. It's hard to fathom parents losing even one son- let alone two in such a short period of time. I hope someone knows something and comes forward.
