Theis used to work at the Leather's Oil Company gas station. He was described as a reliable employee, one who was always on time. The only bit of trouble he got in was when he took $30 from the till. He confessed to the theft and was suspended. While on leave, Theis claimed he needed a change of scenery, and that he wouldn't be coming back. In January 1994, Theis and two accomplices robbed the gas station at gunpoint. Theis knew when the weekend receipts would be full, but did not know how many employees would be there. After collecting around $9000, Theis rounded up the three employees: Mary Beth Garey, Kay Endicott, and Rosalie Girtz, into the workshop and made them lie face down. He then shot all three of them in the head. He stayed in town for a few days, but fled after he heard his two accomplices confessed. There was some debate back on the old forum as to whether or not Theis is still alive. I personally believe he is dead. His distinctive features (way over 6', giant panther tattoo, that toothy grin, etc) would give him away pretty quickly I would imagine. The questions are, if he's alive, where is he? I can't see him lasting long in Mexico. And if he's dead, what happened? There are two schools of thought. One is that he was murdered by his accomplices, one of whom killed himself shortly after being arrested. The other is that he committed suicide after the rampage. Some have likened this case to that of Beacher Hackney, someone who was pissed off with his workplace and looked for revenge, with no intentions of leaving alive. I don't buy that though, Theis chose to walk away from his job. And while it's not the biggest amount, $9000 is a pretty big amount for a gas station. I truly believe robbery was the motive, and Theis decided not to leave any witnesses. And if he planned on suicide, why wait until his accomplices cracked to do it? Thoughts? I was actually going to bring Theis up this week but you beat me to it!
I am also of the belief Theis is dead. As Derek pointed out on the old fourm, AMW hasn't aired his case since the mid-late 1990's. That's a long time span for an accused triple murderer not to be shown again. Not even when they did the unsuccessful "cold case" segment in the mid 2000's did they air Theis despite airing older and/or less severe cases.
There is a Facebook group dedicated to finding him. But I think Theis is, no pun intended, six feet under.

I was actually surprised he hadn't been brought up earlier, since he was a popular cold case discussion.
Anyway, I'm still at a loss as to him. While staunchly believing he's dead, I really can't decide how. As I stated before, I don't think it would be suicide. But if he was murdered, who killed him, and where's his body?

I would go with the murdered rather than suicide angle and say his associates killed him. But it's not so much I have reasons to validate that except to highlight the relative inattention paid to his case by AMW and just about everyone else since. That kinda tells me authorities are leaning towards him being dead as well. It is rather odd how quiet his case has been in the past decade.

The lack of attention to his case surprises me. He would've been a perfect contender for the FBI Ten Most Wanted list. The authorities must truly believe he's dead, probably due to all the rumors.

I'm also under the belief that Theis is dead, as theczar mentioned, Theis is among the most distinctive fugitives in AMW history and workplace killers tend to kill themselves shortly after the crime if given the opportunity. Consider that he's only been wanted since 1994, the fact that AMW never aired his case after sometime in the mid 90s, makes me wonder if the detectives think that no one would have recongized a dead man. There are two other points about this case I want to bring up. 1: Posters on the Unsolved Mysteries forums have been talking about this case for years. They mention that after the crime, it was believed that Theis may have fled to Mexico and I'm curious as to why authorities believed that. If Theis fled to Mexico then he may have suffered a similar fate to that of say Jaime Borbon. www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?p=30837002: Theis is among the few fugitives that were submitted to NAMUS (National Missing & Unidentified Persons system). Normally when you submit a case to NAMUS, you want to see if any unidentified remains match that of the person you're searching for. They mention that they have Theis's DNA in the system which would be helpful if his remains could be located (however if he died in Mexico then that will probably never happen). www.findthemissing.org/en/cases/show/13430

If he fled to Mexico, I doubt he'd last long. He'd stick out like a sore thumb. My guess is his body's buried in the woods somewhere

I found an archived news posting that AMW filmed a segment on Tyrom Theis on March 8, 1994. So he was probably first aired later that month.

Just wanted to bump this up since I was helping out a source who thought unidentified remains could belong to Theis. Fulton County John Doe in Georgia in 1995. (Found during a hit and run in Georgia, looked like Theis and had a dragon tattoo on chest) Unfortunately, Theis has been officially ruled out as a possibility on the NAMUS website. Hopefully whoever this young man is will have his identity discovered soon though. And if Theis is dead, hopefully one day his body will be found as well. identifyus.org/en/cases/691

Some info from the Tyrom Theis "community" page on Facebook (phone isn't letting me copy and paste)
Possible AKA: Turin Walter Crozier
From old FBI poster: (these are on the archived posters so I'm assuming ok to post)
Oregon Driver's License Number: 4795638
Social Security Number: 543-19-6279
Also should be noted that the large panther tattoo has blood dripping from its claws.

Another interesting aspect is the old FBI poster (which can be viewed at the Facebook community group) says there are no fingerprints on file for Theis. While he has some distinct features otherwise, I felt was worth mentioning.

Found a 1996 article through Newslibrary which mentioned the detectives saying that Tyrom was also dealing drugs at the time of the murders. One theory is a customer may have murdered Tyrom to get the money he had stolen.

The best article I have read in this case is no longer on the web. Contrary to some reports, it seems Tyrom fled town immediately (when detectives went to his apartment, he was long gone). This article said that the case was solved when the police discovered that the crime was committed during a time where there was very little business at the gas station, and additionally, Tyrom was having an affair with the female accomplice (her husband turned her in after he found the cash at their home).
When amwcards.com was up and running in the mid-2000s, they listed Tyrom as possibly being in the Northwest US. Keep in mind, for the FBI to obtain a UFAP warrant as they have in this case, they have to have evidence that Theis fled the State of Oregon. I'm starting to suspect that he might be dead, however, because the police haven't bothered putting him on law enforcement websites, and AMW hadn't aired the case in years prior to it folding.
Some of the rumors are that Tyrom is dead up on Mount Hood, and if that's the case, I doubt they would find his remains there.
