FRANKLIN, Ind. -- Police hope brand-new information might generate fresh tips from the public almost a decade after a 10-year-old and his stepmother were found dead in their home.
Officers with the Franklin Police Department are hopeful a different angle will lead them to the person or people responsible for killing Blake and Chynna Dickus on July 24, 2006.
That day, nine years ago this Friday, has forever changed Christina Dickus’ life.
"There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about this. Driving up to that home, seeing the caution tape around it. I’ll never forget," Dickus said Wednesday.
That is the day her 10-year-old son and his 26-year-old stepmother were killed in their home on the north side of Franklin. Both victims had been stabbed and Blake suffered blunt force trauma.
It’s nine years later and the case still remains unsolved. Christina, her friends and family are still trying to help investigators find answers.
They found a nationally renowned group of detectives on the East Coast known as the Vidocq Society and pointed Franklin police in that direction.
The nonprofit group out of Philadelphia is made up of the nation’s leading forensic professionals -- including current and former FBI profilers and scientists who help with unsolved murder cases.
"They are doing their best to help find this person or people who we don't know. To solve this -- to give Blake and Chynna, our family, everyone -- justice," Christina said.
Franklin investigators say the Vidocq Society suggested they release information about a series of residential burglaries between June 2006 and 2007. The information could prove to be important to the case.
"For two years during the summertime months of June and July, usually in the category of Monday through Friday, daylight hours, we were having residential burglaries. These burglaries occurred in a half-mile radius of where our murder occurred. One occurred on the same day on the same street," said FPD Detective Sgt. John Borges.
Police said similar items were taken from each of the burglarized homes. They include a bicentennial coin set, two 1978 coin dollars, a Tupperware pitcher with a green top and a 1968 Maine Township High School ring from Illinois.
All five of the reported burglaries had a "T" pattern cut into the window screens -- which police say could be a key piece of evidence.
"We began to discuss that with the Vidoqc Society and we also look at some of the significant things around them. In each of those burglaries, we saw there was some ransacking that went on and it appeared refrigerators were either left open or gone through," Borges said.
Franklin detectives and the Dickus family are urging anyone who had a similar burglary or found something suspicious to contact them.
Even a shred of evidence could lead to a major break in the Dickus murder case.
"We are certainly hoping this will unlock a piece of the puzzle that we don't have right now," Borges said.
Investigators also hope a billboard on State Road 135 just south of Bargersville will prompt someone to come forward.
There is a $25,000 reward for tips that lead to an arrest. Anyone with any information is asked to call Franklin police at (317) 346-1142 or leave an anonymous tip at (317) 346-1100.

Thoughts? The reason I'm placing this case in the unsolved on tv section is that it was featured on the syndicated crime show "Crime Watch Daily." So in addition to the numbers in the article, you can also submit a tip at crimewatchdaily.com or call their toll free tip line at 1-844-800-CRIME. It seems there is new hope in this case thanks to the Vidocq society. Let's hope this is the year Blake and Chynna's murder is finally solved.
