PAWTUCKET - "I remember going to her funeral, just seeing her box there because she was mutilated," said Tracy Stewart. She was born just days apart from her cousin, Wendy Madden. They grew up together as close friends.
"We grew up having fun, just being a bunch of kids, with jheri curls," she said with a laugh.
But those good times were short lived... in 1991 Madden was found murdered, strangled to death behind Jan's bar in Pawtucket - which is now just an empty lot.
Since then, Stewart has done everything in her power to find out who is responsible.
Scouring the internet she came across a book on unsolved mysteries throughout the country, which links Madden's death to two other similar strangulations in the area that went cold for sometime. One was solved after 5 years, and though police do not believe that suspect was involved in Madden's death, Stewart still thinks a serial killer of some kind was responsible.
"I kind of think maybe it could have been a copycat because there was a serial killer around at the time," she said.
Now that the Pawtucket Police Department is using modern technology and social media to gather more information about the reopened case, they say they're not anything ruling out.
"To say that we're eliminating that as a possibility, no. But there's no evidence to suggest that it is," said Major Arthur Martins.
So for now, Stewart is keeping her fingers crossed that today's detectives will do a better job solving the case then they did 23 years ago... at a time madden was known for prostitution and drug use.
"It was more of a case of oh well, she shouldn't have done what she was doing. And I don't think it got the attention it deserved... because she was just written off as a statistic," she said.
Thoughts? The above article is from a year ago. Obviously while there's admittedly not much to work and sleuth with, besides wondering if a serial killer or copycat killer did this, what does give hope here is this case has not been forgotten and still has a social media presence.
