SAN BERNARDINO — The San Bernardino Fire Department responded to reports of a “20 victim shooting incident” at a social services office on Wednesday and there were reports of multiple fatalities.
The San Bernardino Police Department said up to three shooters were inside the Inland Regional Center (1365 S. Waterman Ave.). San Bernardino is a city of about 200,000 people that is 60 miles east of Los Angeles.
A police spokeswoman told reporters the suspects were heavily armed and possibly wearing body armor, the Los Angeles Times reported. The same report also indicated the suspects were still at large later Wednesday afternoon, and that they may have drive away in a black SUV.
A spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department told the Riverside Press Enterprise there were “multiple victims.” She could not confirm the number or condition.
ABC 7 cited an unnamed but “very reliable” source that 12 people were killed.
A woman who works at the building where the shootings occurred texted her father, Terry Pettit: “Shooting at my work. People shot.” Pettit told KABC his daughter told him 10 to 20 people were shot.
Loma Linda University Medical Center is expecting an unknown number of patients from the shooting, spokeswoman Briana Pastorino said. She said the extent of the anticipated patients’ injuries is not clear.
The center is across the street from San Bernardino Golf Club and is just north of a popular road that is lined with numerous restaurants.
The Inland Regional Center is a private, nonprofit agency that helps people with developmental disabilities. It has a staff of nearly 670 that provides services to more than 30,000 clients, according to its Facebook page.
It aims to “work on a personal, one-on-one basis with people with developmental disabilities to make their lives better as they define it.”
