LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- October 28th, 2009, an alley near 22nd and Saint Xavier was a scene of tragedy.
“It was the worst thing of my life. To watch everybody around us suffer,” says Timothy O’Connor, father.
Today, October 28th 2015, it's a scene of hope.
Six years ago today, police say brothers 21-year-old Brandon Borders and 17-year-old Timothy O'Connor were shot and killed while sitting in a car in an alley near 22nd and Saint Xavier in the Portland neighborhood. Since then the family says police have followed a number of leads but they still do not have a suspect.
“I just hope to find answers. I just hope that somebody has that in their heart. We know people know things,” says Tammy Borders, Brandon’s mother.
Since no one has come forward, family and friends continue to come to the scene of the crime year after year lighting candles and writing messages for Brandon and Timothy.
“They say time heals all wounds but this is nothing you can really get over. So it's just always a reoccurring thing that you have to look at every year,” says Lamar Kendrick, childhood friend.
The family says even though it's always hard to do, they'll never stop coming back to that ally, knowing they can't give up.
“We can't let them forget. We just can't let everybody forget. We got to keep on until somebody gets enough guts or compassion to come forward,” O’Connor says.
After six years, the case is cold but the family says they feel warmth from those who vow to never forget as they light candles to shed light on what happened on October 28, 2009.
“I just wish I could hear his voice. But he knows we're not going to stop fighting. I'm not, she's not. We can't,” Borders says.
We did speak with the detective who is assigned to this case. He did not wish to appear on camera, but he has just recently taken over the case. He says although it's cold, that doesn't mean they have no leads, and it is still an open investigation. If you do have any information you can call (502) 574-LMPD.
Thoughts? Unfortunately it's now been 6 years and still no answers and there doesn't seem much to work with at least publicly. It says they were sitting in an alley so the possibilities that run through my mind was this was either a robbery turned homicide or a tragic case where their car was mistaken for someone else that the killer was targeting.
