The disappearance of Michigan woman Krista Lueth was featured on the syndicated crime show "Crime Watch Daily." I will post the Charley Project description of the case below, along with an update on the case that was covered on Crime Watch Daily:
"Lueth was last seen at her rented house in the 1100 block of Eureka Street in Lansing, Michigan on November 11, 2008. She was getting a second bachelor's degree in horticulture at Michigan State University; her previous degree was in botany. She disappeared after she took the bus home from class. Lueth was subletting an apartment on the floor below her to a friend, and spoke to him between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. She was concerned because she'd broken up with her live-in boyfriend and he had just moved out, so her rental costs would increase. She said she planned to sell her truck and take a part-time waitress job to make ends meet. Lueth's friend said she seemed happy during the conversation. After she left her friend's apartment, he didn't hear any noise from upstairs. She was supposed to attend at 6:30 p.m. class at a greenhouse half a mile from home, but never showed up. She has never been heard from again. Lueth may have been carrying a white three-ring binder at the time of her disappearance.
Lueth's family reported her missing after they couldn't get in touch with her and all the calls to her phone went to voice mail; this is uncharacteristic of her. She left her cat locked inside her apartment, as well as a covered pot of food on the stove. It looked as if she had stepped out and planned to return within a short time, but never did. Her loved ones describe her as a reliable, responsible woman who wouldn't have abandoned her pet or left without warning. She was a very good student and planned to apply to a graduate program at Cornell University.
Lueth attended St. Clair High School and later St. Clair County Community College. Her father raised her as a single parent starting when she was twelve years old. Her family believes foul play was involved in her disappearance, and the police also believe she was murdered, possibly at the hands of someone she knew. Her case remains unsolved."
Ok- and here's the update, in 2014, 47-year-old Brad Cournaya of Mason was named the lone and prime suspect in Lueth's disappearance and probable murder. Cournaya was Lueth's one-time boyfriend. Michigan State Police say cell phone records show Cournaya was the last person Lueth called the day she disappeared. Cournaya — who according to court and Department of Corrections records served 14 years in prison for raping a woman at knifepoint — also was in the area of her Lansing home.
Thoughts? Cournaya didn't really help himself in the Crime Watch Daily segment- and neither did his mother. A reporter for the show showed up at his mother's house and asked her if she thought he had anything to do with Krista's case- to which she replied "I honestly don't know." (So even his own mother that he lives with didn't entirely defend him). Suddenly, Cournaya showed up at the house, threatened to attack the show's cameramen, and made a bunch of wild accusations about Krista's personal life that Crime Watch Daily had to stress afterwards there was nothing to back up. I realize Cournaya is technically innocent until proven guilty, and he was taken by surprise, but if you want to claim you're not capable of violently killing someone, perhaps not being so aggressive and threatening to beat up cameramen isn't the way to go. I think the problem is- without a body- it will be hard for police to charge anybody- be it Cournaya or anyone else.
