Investigators launched a national search for a moped driver accused of fatally shooting an acquaintance outside a gas station near Jacksonville last week, Sheriff Hans Miller said.
Detectives identified a motive, which Miller declined to reveal to preserve his agency’s first homicide investigation this year.
“We have very good corroborating evidence that we are looking at regarding areas he might be,” Miller said. “We are looking nationwide.”
The search targets Travares “T” Francis Waters, whose name has multiple aliases in N.C. Department of Public Safety records.
Waters, of Jacksonville, is accused of shooting Tony Vince Lewis Jr., 32, also of Jacksonville, in the upper torso as Lewis drove a four-door Kia at the Shell Station on Cedar Creek Drive and Gum Branch Road between 7:20 and 7:30 p.m. March 17, Miller said.
“They did know each other,” Miller said of Lewis and Waters. “It was personal.”
Surveillance captured footage of the gunfire, which multiple witnesses observed, Miller added.
“There’s nowhere to hide. It’s just a matter of time,” Miller said. “He can’t hide forever.”
On Friday, Onslow County Sheriff’s Office obtained warrants for Waters’ arrest on a murder charge.
“Those arrest warrants have been issued, they are in the system,” Miller said.
Family and friends remembered Lewis at a funeral on Sunday in Jacksonville. A GoFundMe.com site was established for Lewis last week. By Monday, 71 donors had contributed $4,830, according to information from the site — which aims to raise $8,000 to defray funeral costs.

Thoughts? First a few updates, while the exact motive has not been released, authorities are saying the shooting was "personal" and Waters and Lewis knew each other. Waters has a list of prior arrests and convictions. According to records, they include trafficking, possession of drugs, larceny and others. According to a September news article, authorities are focusing on two areas of the country but aren't saying where. Mugshots.com lists a Travares Waters being arrested in Fulton County, Georgia in 2005, but I don't know if it's the same guy. If it is, I would give a heads up to readers in that area to be on the lookout for Waters. But wherever you are, please keep an eye out for this guy. Tony Lewis Jr.'s family obviously cared about him and deserves justice.
