(Above photo credit: ABC Houston) From CBS' Crimesider: HOUSTON -- A 23-year-old man has been charged with capital murder in the shooting deaths of his girlfriend and her baby daughter in their Houston home on Friday. Authorities said Monday that they believed the suspect, Jonathan Figueroa, is heading toward the Mexican border in a maroon Ford Taurus with Texas license plates CTS3225. Homicide detectives said that before Veronica Mercado died, Figueroa made statements to a friend that caused the friend concern for Mercado's welfare. When police went to her home to check on her, they found the front door forced open, CBS affiliate KHOU reports. Mercado, 26, and her daughter, Linette Cano, had been shot multiple times and died at the scene. Mercado was found still holding the child, who would have turned 2 Nov. 21, the station reported. The home's front door had been forced open. Mercado's two older children were at school at the time. A co-worker said Mercado was having problems with Figueroa and was afraid of him. "There is a history of family violence going on here," said Houston Police Department Sgt. Mark Holbrook, according to the station. Figueroa is not the child's father. www.cbsnews.com/news/cops-search-for-boyfriend-in-fatal-houston-shooting-of-woman-and-child/Admin Note #1: Based on articles, anyone with any information on Figueroa's whereabouts should call Houston Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS

Thoughts? I really don't get how a man can allegedly look a 1-year child in the face and shoot them, apparently multiple times, regardless of how angry he may have been with his girlfriend. If Figueroa did this, he's the ultimate coward.
I hope it doesn't take that long, but Figueroa is now my #1 fugitive for 2015 and will likely still be if he isn't caught at the end of the year.

All fugitives wanted for violent crimes scare me, but Jonathan Figueroa's mere photo scares me, he really looks like a controlling sociopath that could flee to start a new life after leaving a mother and her nearly two-year old to die after shooting them. I really have nothing but language that would not be permitted to be mentioned on this forum to say about him. For the sake of Veronica Mercado and Linette Cano's friends and family, Mexico had better arrest Jonathan Figueroa quickly since in less than three days, you can easily get to Mexico from Texas.

If Figueroa gets to Mexico, hopefully they can still catch him. It's just it would obviously take longer, complicates matters and even if caught it's a long extradition process in many cases. Hopefully, it's a quick capture, but if it's not, hopefully he's eventually captured in Mexico and will be sent back.

I think it's safe to assume that sadly my #1 fugitive of 2015 has made it to Mexico by now. But this info on where he is specifically is hopefully helpful.

I double checked to make sure Figueroa was still at large once me and HeadMarshal made the decision to add him to our site dirty dozen and unfortunately as of October 29th, 2018, I still see him listed as not in custody in Harris County's online criminal court records.
Also, I noticed this is a capital murder case. I normally am against the death penalty but in this case for obvious reasons death is too lenient for this guy if he's convicted and he deserves to rot in a pool of excrement if guilty.
Nevertheless, this becomes a moot point if he's in Mexico since they would likely only send him back if prosecutors agree not to seek the death penalty. (But hopefully his fellow inmates will find out he allegedly shot a 1-year old girl to death if he does go to the state penn).

Sadly Figueroa still listed as not in custody in Harris County's online records search as of May 13th, 2019.
Additionally, I am moving our thread to Fugitives on TV since the OP article is from CBS's national news website.

It astounds me that case isn't more well known. I hope it's because they have a good idea where he is and are simply working on getting him back. Of all my most wanted yearly fugitives, Figueroa is arguably the least known of those still at large (actually he might be one of the few still left at large since I haven't double checked), which boggles my mind.

As of today, September 14, 2022, the Harris County Court Records database still shows Jonathan as having a warrant/not being in custody. Additionally, I did not see an UFAP (Unlawful Flight To Avoid Prosecution) warrant for Jonathan in PACER.

I hope this guy is featured on amv season 27 or in pursuit season 5 because this guy needs to be caught if he can murder an infant child who knows what he can do next and so they victims and their families get the justice they so rightfully deserve
