"SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A San Antonio police officer is hospitalized after a suspect shot him several times in an overnight confrontation at a west San Antonio apartment.
Police Chief Bill McManus says Officer Richard Ruiz is listed in stable condition at a San Antonio hospital and is expected to recover.
The shooting happened shortly before midnight at the Lago Vista Apartments when Ruiz answered a call about a mentally disturbed man with a gun.
Police incident reports say that as soon as Ruiz spotted Jose Miguel Gonzalez, the 30-year-old suspect fired at the officer, hitting him in the right leg and side of his chest.
Ruiz returned fire, but it's not known if Gonzalez was wounded. The suspect fled.
Police say the suspect is thought to be driving a red 1991 Chevrolet Z-71 pickup truck with the license tag number 4NV-X86. Gonzalez is described as five feet nine inches tall, weighing 130 pounds, with long black hair, brown eyes, a goatee tied with a rubber band. He has tattoos on both arms, his face, back and chest. Police warn that he's believed to be armed and dangerous."
Thoughts? The above was a 2007 news article about this case, which was a web-exclusive case on AMW's old website. I'm confused by the wording a little. If Jose Gonzalez was the mentally deranged man, I do have some sympathy for him (as well as sympathy for Officer Ruiz since just because you survive getting shot doesn't make everything suddenly okay), but he needs to be apprehended for his own safety as well as others. As far as I know, Jose Gonzalez has not yet been captured as of this posting date (11/2/2015). However, if anyone has proof otherwise, please feel free to let us know.
