According to reports and the AMW airings, Urena and three other accomplices broke into the home of the Kerston family. They were all wearing masks from horror movies, such as Jason and the Grim Reaper. When the entered the house, they first confronted the teenage son, who was asleep on the couch, and began beating him. They then went from room to room throughout the entire house, looking for valuables. When they confronted the parents, Urena left their room. The parents heard a shot, and Urena came back, stating he just shot their son in the leg, and he would shoot him in the head if they did not cooperate. During the burglary, Urena complained that his Jason mask made it hard for him to see, so he briefly took it off. The family was able to get a good look at him and identify him. Urena is suspected in several other burglaries in the area, and is also wanted for questioning in a murder that occured near San Fransisco. He was first profiled back in 1997. Personally, I'm at a loss for guessing where he may be today. Even though he has a huge family, and they may be hiding him, I'd assume he'd slip up by now. Given that he was allegedly a big meth user, it's possibly he might be dead. I just don't know where to start with him. Thoughts? I have nothing to add except to say I "guess" if he's still alive he's in Mexico. But that's always my go to/easy-way out guess whenever we're discussing a Hispanic fugitive close enough to the border.

He may have fled to Mexico, but there's just something about him that makes it seem like he should've been an easy capture. I just can't seem him lasting 15 years on the run without a lot of assistance if he's still alive. And if he's not alive, where his body? This case just has puzzled me for some reason.

A couple of points I want to bring up with this case.
1: Even though most sources say that he's hispanic, the AMW playing card archived website actually mentions that he's "Hawaiian". He could be bi-racial and may have even fled to Hawaii.
2: Heavy meth use can drastically change someone's appearance. Since he's been on the run since 1996, he may look now nothing like he did in the mid 90's.
3: I have yet to see a source mention the details on the San Francisco murder he's wanted for questioning in. Depending on what that murder involved, it may reveal more about his criminal lifestyle (organized crime connections perhaps).

I remember that the old web site mentioned he was "easily mistaken for Hispanic" but I couldn't remember if it was him or another fugitive who was "Hawaiian". Also, he may have lost weight or aged drastically if its true he was a heavy meth user. Hard to tell though, since this is the only photo (I think) we have of him.
And I'm also interested in this murder he's questioned in. We don't have a victims name or any sort of motive or circumstances regarding it. It's to the point where, even if he was responsible, there's a chance he may not even be charged with it since so much time has gone by.

Joel Vidal Urena still has a warrant listed in the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office listing as of this posting date (11/30/2017). Also it lists his race as Cuban. Even if he wasn't born in Cuba and is simply of Cuban heritage, he theoretically could have fled there imo. www.sonomasheriff.org/warrant-search/ |

I've received several messages from people claiming Urena passed away in Mexico back in January.
I do not mean this as disrespect to anyone but this site can not claim a fugitive as captured without definitive proof and so far I have not found anything.
My condolences to any family members if Urena is deceased. Not to condone his alleged crimes, but I understand that he must still part of someone's family. Unfortunately this website needs more proof. It's not because we don't believe anyone, but official site policy that we need something official even if we believe someone is telling the truth.

If that is indeed Urena, that would be yet another American fugitive who was found dead in Mexico. He'd join the ranks of Jaime Borbon and Esat Bici, among others.

Boy that's a name that goes way back. I remember Joel Urena cause I vaguely remember seeing a profile of him once on AMW before it was 'ganked' off the air due to so called Budget problems.
I remember him as well as his crime cause in high school I added him to the long list of AMW fugitives who I typed up all about in like 12 or 18 essays on the show, J.W., and how endless the list seems to never stop.

For whatever it's worth, there is still an active unlawful flight to avoid prosecution warrant in PACER court records search as of September 29th, 2021.
Also maybe my memory gets mixed up all the time but I can swear I remember contacting a law enforcement official and even they stated they were aware of the death rumors and were monitoring them.
I can't claim someone is dead no matter how insistent someone is or even if it seems obvious to me the person is dead, unless law enforcement officially states it.
This is not about not believing people. This is about needing his death announcement to be made official.
