The killer may have flown the coop — literally.
Miriam Velez-Samayoa, who was expected to fly along with her boyfriend to Guatemala to take care of her sick mother, was found dead in her bathroom early Saturday. The 28-year-old Queens woman’s body was burned from head to toe, said police sources.
Velez-Samayoa and Carlos Leon, also known as Carlos Alvarado, had tickets for a 3 a.m. flight. Cops want to question him in the woman’s death, but they fear he may have boarded the flight.
The victim’s body was found engulfed in flames inside her third-floor apartment around 4 a.m. on 147th St. near 90th Ave. in Jamaica, police said. Cops also suspect that some sort of accelerant was used in the attack. “We are trying to locate the (boyfriend),” a police source told the Daily News.
Neighbors also fear the boyfriend may have left the country.
“They had a flight scheduled and everything,” said fourth-floor neighbor Josue Tohom, 23, who said Velez-Samayoa and her boyfriend routinely fought. “They would have arguments every now and then but nothing really serious.”
It was not immediately clear if the suspect boarded the flight.
One of victim’s roommates called 911 after he saw smoke coming from the bathroom, according to Rojelio Ramos, a friend of one of the victim’s roommates.
Velez-Samayoa and her boyfriend had been living with at least six other people.
The building superintendent and another roommate suffered smoke inhalation as they poured water over the burning woman while snuffing out the blaze, a police source said. “(It looks like someone) took the shower curtain, drenched it in gasoline and set her on fire,” Ramos 33, said, speaking in Spanish.
Hector Aigular, owner of Restaurant Tienda Guetemalteca el Tikal on Jamaica Ave. where Velez-Samayoa worked, said he last saw the doomed woman on Thursday when she picked up her check.
“She said ‘I’m going to my country because I want to see my mom because my mom is sick,’ ” Aigular recalled.
Investigators were trying to determine if the woman was dead before she was set on fire.
Witnesses said she wasn’t screaming or thrashing about when they found her immersed in flames, according to police sources. An autopsy has been scheduled for Sunday to determine how Velez-Samayoa died.
“The police that talked to them were saying maybe he killed or choked her in silence and left her burning there,” Tohom said.
Heart broken relatives said the young woman met her boyfriend online — but never introduced him to them.
Velez-Samayoa moved to New York from New Jersey about five months ago, according to her brother-in-law Roberto Castro.
“She was like my little sister,” Castro, 32, said. “She was a good, hard working person.”
Her boyfriend is the opposite neighbors said.
“The guy never worked,” Tohom said. “No one ever really met him because he never came out of the house.”
