Peaceful Waterfront Night Ends In Bloodshed
At about 1:00 a.m. on October 22, 2005 a group of friends were hanging out, drinking on the waterfront of the Gulf Coast in Sarasota, Fla., listening to the waves crash into the bay in the dark. Cops say it's a common hangout for transients in the area when they can't get into the Salvation Army.
Police say eventually the group was joined by two men, later identified as Juan Rodriguez and Henry Ortiz, who brought more beer and a radio. Witnesses told police the two had been friends for years. Some of the men started filing out, starting back to the Salvation Army, leaving Rodriguez, Ortiz and one other man.
Suddenly, the witness told police, a fight erupted between Rodriguez and Ortiz. But because the witness doesn't speak Spanish, he had no idea what the men were arguing over. Then, without warning, the witness says Rodriguez pulled a knife and repeatedly stabbed Ortiz in the neck, chest and abdomen, then took some money off of Ortiz and fled. Fearing for his life because of what he had seen, the witness left with Rodriguez.
A Trail Of Blood Shows A Dying Man's Path
Cops say Ortiz was stabbed as many as 12 times and that the stab wound to Ortiz' throat severed his jugular veins. Still, somehow he survived the initial attack. In a desperate attempt to find help, police say Ortiz staggered a quarter mile down the highway to a gas station, believing it to be a 24-hour operation.
A trail of blood plotted his path to the storefront. When Ortiz arrived, however, he found the station closed. He made his way around the side of the building where cops believe he waited for the first employees to arrive. Sadly, his wounds were too severe and Henry Ortiz passed away by the side door of the gas station.
A Frightened Witness Follows The Murder Suspect
Meanwhile, Rodriguez and the witness traveled a short distance together. Sarasota police say the witness had followed Rodriguez for fear of what would happen to him if he tried to run off. The witness says Rodriguez cleaned a self-inflicted cut on his arm with beer and fashioned an impromptu bandage from a plastic bag. The two cut through a church where Rodriguez hopped a fence and disappeared. The witness then fled to the Salvation Army where he called the police.
Detective Carmen Woods of the Sarasota Police Department says that Rodriguez is a heavy drinker with several drunk and disorderly conduct charges in his past. Woods thinks that is what will eventually get him caught. But because Rodriguez is a transient with no known family connections, cops say that he could be anywhere. So keep an eye out for this Jackie Chan look-alike.
Thoughts? The above was the AMW archived description- Rodriguez was aired on the June 7th, 2008 episode of America's Most Wanted.
