Accused killer Daniel Lee Henry has been added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Most Wanted list in the wake of a triple homicide at a residence in Jonesborough.
Information led investigators to believe Henry left the state, possibly for California. There is a $1,000 reward for information leading to his capture. Washington County Sheriff’s deputies found the three people dead in a Jonesborough residence early Saturday morning and were looking for Henry, who reportedly claimed he killed his family.
Sheriff Ed Graybeal identified the three killed as Robert Kenneth Henry, 66, Melody Diane Henry, 55, and Barbara June Hammonds, 64. He said investigators believe the victims were killed between midnight Oct. 1 and midnight Oct. 2.
A couple who lives down the road from the Henry residence said Barbara Hammonds was Daniel Henry’s aunt and the other two victims were his parents. The couple, who asked to only be identified as Sara and James, said they moved to their Skyline Road residence about a month ago and only had one encounter with Daniel Henry.
“I gave him a ride to Ingles on Thursday,” James said, adding that Henry said he’d recently returned to Washington County from San Francisco. He said Daniel Henry acted strange, as if he had taken some type of substance, so James wouldn’t let the man into his home. That was the first and only encounter the couple had with the accused killer, they said.
“Miss Barbara had come over and introduced herself and met my wife and kids,” James said, referring to the woman he called Daniel Henry’s aunt. He said Hammonds lived in the Henry home and took care of Henry’s parents. They said Daniel Henry’s mother was a leg amputee who was blind and confined to a wheelchair.
Graybeal said the bodies were found at 123 Skyline Road off Tenn. Highway 81 northwest of Jonesborough around 1:30 a.m. after the sheriff’s office received a tip from a woman in California.
“All the victims are in their 60s and they were all shot in the head,” Graybeal said. No weapon was found at the scene, he said.
The sheriff said 911 received a call from a dispatch center in California to conduct a welfare check at that residence.
Deputies were looking for Henry, 38, who lived in the Skyline residence. The caller reported that Henry had said he killed his family.
All vehicles known to be associated with the victims were at the residence, so investigators do not know what Henry may be driving. The neighbors who spoke to the Johnson City Press said they believed Daniel Henry could be on foot because they didn’t know of him owning a vehicle.
A warrant has been issued for Henry’s arrest for three counts of first-degree murder. He was considered armed and dangerous, and the TBI said he should not be approached.
All three victims were taken to the Jenkins Forensic Center on the campus of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, for an autopsy as the investigation continues.
Henry is described as a white man with brown hair and hazel eyes, He is 5 feet, 11 inches tall and about 190 pounds. While photographs provided by law enforcement show him with a beard, the neighbors said he did not have facial hair when they saw him on Thursday.
The sheriff’s office said it called in the TBI to help locate Henry, and his information has been entered into the national crime information computer. Anyone with information on Daniel L Henry’s location is asked to call a local law enforcement agency or the Washington County Sheriff’s office at 423-788-1414.
Henry was a frequent visitor to the Washington County Detention Center. According to jail records, he was booked on charges of obtaining narcotics by fraud in 2002, domestic violence in 2003, leaving the scene of an accident and driving with a revoked or suspended license in December 2012, driving with a revoked or suspended license again in February 2013 and public intoxication in April 2013.
