Three-year-old Rachael Runyan was abducted from the city playground behind her home in Sunset, Utah on August 26, 1982 by a black man driving a blue midsize car. Twenty-one days later, her body was found dumped in a creek off a dirt road in Morgan County. Years later, a disturbing message was found in a bathroom of a market. The author claimed responsibility and suggested that the murder was part of a Satanic ritual or cult. Police believe that Rachael may have been videotaped in a "snuff film" and that she was molested, abused, tortured, and murdered in it. Her murder remains unsolved. Thoughts? It's a sad case with little much to go on. This case was aired on UM in 1989 but it is unclear if she was featured in AMW. I think if the cult factor was true, law enforcement should've look deeper into that. This is the composite of Rachael's abductor from the UM wikia website. Also according to the wikia, a former New Mexico inmate is the prime suspect in the case but has not been publicly identified. Since DNA has become very helpful in solving cold cases and getting charges pressed against an accused suspect, there may not have been any usable evidence located where Rachael's remains are found.

They interviewed Phil Olmstead, who was Police Chief at one point after the murder. Here's what the article says:
Salt Lake City, UT -- Every Aug. 26, Sunset police Chief Phil Olmstead sits on a bench at Doxey Elementary School and remembers 3-year-old Rachael Marie Runyan. The toddler was kidnapped and murdered 15 years ago on Aug. 26, 1982. ``It has been frustrating over the years to not really have the answer that you want,'' said Olmstead. Rachael's mother, Elaine Runyan Simmons, refuses to return to the spot where a man in a dark blue car whisked her daughter away. ``You go through the whos and whys and how somebody can do this. You just can't come to any solution,'' said the 42-year-old Kaysville woman, who recently remarried. ``It's the most cruel act that anybody can inflict on a human being.'' In the early afternoon of that blistering summer day, Simmons was cooking sloppy joes for lunch while Rachael and her two younger brothers played in the sand under a slide at the school playground. They were 15 feet from their own back yard. The children tried to run when a man offered them candy. Two made it to the house. Justin, 5, ran into the kitchen and told his mother, ``I have some real bad news.'' The ensuing search involved hundreds of police officers and citizens. It mobilized the entire Davis County area and soon spread nationwide, Olmstead said. ``I've never experienced anything like it, community-wise,'' he said. ``I literally got calls from every agency in almost this entire Wasatch Front. It became alive with support.'' But three weeks after the abduction, Rachael's family got tragic news: Her body was found near Trapper's Loop in northern Morgan County. She was hogtied with nylon parachute chord. The cause of death could not be determined. She had not been sexually assaulted, Olmstead said. Despite appearances on several national television shows, including ``America's Most Wanted,'' police are no closer today to finding the murderer, Olmstead said. A $20,000 reward is still offered for information leading to the killer. ``I'm still hoping that [the killer] makes a bad choice in who he talks to and comes forward,'' he said. ``The case is still solvable even though it's 15 years old.'' Simmons has since focused her energy on helping parents avoid the horror she experienced. In addition to speaking publicly about Rachael's death, she helped start Utah's Missing Children, a nonprofit group to prevent child kidnappings. ``Reliving something over and over is therapeutic, but I have a lot of energy and drive to fight back,'' she said. ``I'm proud that I was strong enough to do that. It hasn't been easy, and it came at a big price. It changed our lives forever.''

They may be VERY close to solving this: youtu.be/YRCnIjBmjO4Police Chief acknowledges for the first time: 1) DNA evidence exists; 2) Person of interest has been questioned (he refused to divulge that person’s name, but I am aware of who it is); 3) Utah Attorney General’s Office is investigating (this makes me VERY optimistic, because many of the investigators with DA and AG offices are usually very seasoned).

New update: youtu.be/Cd0G5lJhj5Y1) Composite was done through recollection of Rachael’s brother. He was age 5 at the time. He believes the sketch was inaccurate. Suspect may have had a dark complexion, and may not have been black. Her brother also said the mustache in the composite was wrong. There was a gap in it. 2) New person of interest in this case. He lived in the area at the time (it was revealed for the first time that the kidnapper/killer offered to take Rachael to get ice cream at a store called Bobco’s. Only a local resident would have known that). Additionally, he had the exact same vehicle as the abductor, and he has a history of crimes against children.

We now know why there was so much concern about the composite: the police had put together a composite before they released the one we have come to know. The first sketch is the one we are familiar with. It depicts an African-American suspect with a full mustache. However, the first sketch made (second image) is that of an individual who has a dark complexion (and may be African American, biracial, or another race/ethnicity). The private detective on the case believes the second sketch is the one more likely to be accurate (he stressed the suspect may not necessarily be an African-American, but someone with a dark complexion). The new tip, which points to the new person of interest they are looking at, was reported to the private investigator after the tipster realized that the suspect may not be African-American (the tipster did not report the tip for years because he/she believed the police were looking for an African-American). Justin, Rachael's brother, was one of the people consulted with to make the sketch. His chief complaint with regards to the sketch is that it did not have a gap in the mustache, as he believes the suspect looked like. The third image attached shows the suspect in the first sketch with a gap in the mustache (which is probably the best sketch available now).
To get up to date, with this new suspect:
1) He had a vehicle similar to the one used in the abduction; 2) He had prior child sex crime convictions; 3) He lived in the area, and from the evidence, it appears the abductor/killer was a local resident.
Even if the suspect is deceased as the new Chief revealed, it would be nice to know this person is incapable of harming anyone else.
