TIPS: If you have any information that would help lead to the arrest of Raimundo Neto, based on his wanted location, our advice would be to contact Greater Atlanta Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS
Raimundo Barbosa Neto was aired on December 2nd, 2006 episode of America's Most Wanted. And if you're not outraged enough after reading about the brutal murder he's accused of, you'll be even more so after learning of a shocking update in this case. Below is the AMW archive description of the crime itself:
From Divorce To Tragedy
When officers got into Raimundo Barboza Neto's apartment in Sandy Springs, Ga., they found the body of his ex-wife, 33-year-old Ivone Vitorino Rios, face down on a pool of blood. She had been stabbed to death. The entire crime scene gave signs that an intense and violent struggle had taken place. The knife that caused Ivone's wounds was also near her body.
It didn't take cops very long to indentify the suspect of this brutal murder -- his ex-husband Raimundo Barboza Neto.
The couple had just been divorced for 10 days and cops say on Sept. 9, 2006, Ivone was supposed to go to Barboza Neto's apartment to pay him some money that she owed him.
But when Ivone didn't show up to work, a coworker became anxious and contacted her Pastor. The Pastor also found it strange that Ivone would skip work. And since Ivone wasn't answering her cell phone, they were sure that something bad happened to her.
A Call To The Brazilian Community
After the crime, Barboza Neto allegedly forced one of his co-workers to drive him to Greenville, South Carolina and to purchase a Greyhound ticket to Boston, Mass. Cops say this is when Barboza confessed to his co-workers that he had killed Ivone.
However, cops are not sure whether Barboza got in the bus. They say he could be anywhere in the country, but most likely hanging out in a Brazilian community.
However this fugitive has some unique character traits and habits that should be easy to notice. Barboza Neto is extremely clean and organized and cops say he likes being by himself. That explains why he doesn't have many friends.
Cops say he is a loner, who enjoys watching pornographic male on male videos.
Originally from Brazil, Barboza Neto speaks very little English. In fact, he can barely write in Portuguese. This is why cops are making a special call to the Brazilian community in the United States to cooperate in the investigation if they know of Barboza Neto's whereabouts. "
OK. That was the AMW archive from 5 years ago. A lot has changed since then. Here's the update...
On October 18th, 2012, Neto was arrested in Goiania, the capital city in the Brazilian state of Goias.
However, he was released because there was no warrant for him and his name was not on the official website of Interpol.
The mother of Ivone Rios was interviewed for one Brazilian article and stated she didn't think the case would have ever have a resolution.
According to a Fulton County criminal case search, the case against Neto was placed on dead docket, which means the prosuection suspends the case indefinitely, but it can be re-instated at any time by the court.
Thoughts? This is completely ridiculous. I don't know if Brazil didn't have a warrant for him in their country or the problem was vice versa but in any case all it would have taken was communication with law enforcement back in the states to confirm this was a man wanted for a brutal murder. And not all fugitives wanted by Interpol are on the site itself. It doesn't mean Interpol doesn't have a flag on them or have them in their database. Were these people that lazy they couldn't make a few phone calls, or I hate to say it, just didn't care?
Between Claudia Hoerig and this case, I will refuse to watch the Olympics in Rio next year unless her and Neto are set back here. I know one guy in America with no real power isn't going to do much, but if more politicians like Tim Ryan of Ohio had the courage to step forward and demand justice, this wouldn't be happening. Brazil needs to send back Hoerig, whose citizenship they already revoked, and stop playing games with Neto. And yeah, Victor Barnard was arrested, and while I'm glad for that arrest and hopeful he will be extradited, it doesn't excuse these other cases from not moving forward.
This seems to be case where it's pretty much known where Neto is or likely is, and there just needs to be pressure to get him back here.
