Four months after police found a 23-year-old father of two gunned down in a grassy strip on Wood Drive, investigators identified a suspect in the shooting. Police listed Wymon Leotis Portis, 25, among the department's 10 most wanted suspects on Tuesday. He is wanted on charges of murder and attempted murder in the 2014 death of Antonio Lacy and the shooting of an unidentified 25-year-old man. Lacy died shortly after finishing Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 27, 2014. Family members told AL.com Lacy suffered at least 10 gunshot wounds. According to Mobile County Metro Jail records, Portis is 5-foot-10 with brown eyes and black hair. He last listed his home address on Fairfield Road. Detectives said Portis should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on his whereabouts can contact the Mobile Police Department at 251-208-7211.Records from Mobile County Metro Jail show Portis has been booked 13 times since 2008, when he was 18 years old. In 2011, a woman told investigators Portis pulled a gun on her. "People began grabbing his arms... to stop him from shooting myself and my cousin," she wrote in a deposition filed in court. "Four shots went into the ground. He broke loose from the people... and placed the weapon to my face." Mobile police arrested Portis on charges of reckless endangerment and menacing. In December 2012, a judge ordered Portis to serve 90 days behind bars after he pleaded guilty to both crimes. Jail records show he has also faced charges including attempting to elude police, assault, altering the identity of a firearm and carrying a pistol without a license. Thoughts? This case, in my opinion, represents a failure of the justice system. Here we have a guy with over a dozen arrests on his record, some serious charges too, and he seems to just be given a little time here and there. THREE MONTHS for pulling a gun on a woman and the only reason she wasn't shot (in my opinion) was people were physically restraining him? He was an arm restraint away from attempted murder or worse. I realize unfortunately if you were to harshly punish every violent criminal, or not allow as many guilty pleas that reduce a sentence, jails would become more crowded than a One Direction concert, and courts would obviously be inundated. However, the sad thing is if Portis was a drug addict or had some other type of non-violent offenses where the only harm was to himself, he'd have been given more time than what he got for these crimes, and would probably still be in jail today.
P.S. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything about a motive for the murder of Antonio Lacy, some articles say he had a prior record (once again, nothing excuses his murder) and he actually survived getting shot 10 times in 2013, but obviously wasn't so lucky in 2014. His father was hopeful he'd get out of the lifestyle he had lived, but sadly Portis took away that opportunity. Even without a motive known, Portis's record speaks for itself.
P.P.S I found this case online and thought it would be a good case to post and talk about, but one thing I'm confused about is whether his name really is "Wymon" since the Mobile Police Department spells it Wyman. Usually I'd trust the police site over the media, but based on law of averages I'm going with the spelling of "Wymon" for now since there's not just one but multiple articles with that spelling. It's an understandable name for either source to misspell since phonetically it sounds the same. If we have his name misspelled, please e-mail us and correct us.
