Cascade County prosecutors filed a deliberate homicide charge Tuesday against Branden Miesmer, an at-large fugitive wanted for allegedly shooting a Great Falls man in the face, possibly related to an ongoing drug trafficking investigation.
Miesmer, 26, is now the subject of an extensive law enforcement search in the hills north of Helena. His bail is set at $1.5 million. Investigators have yet to reveal the victim’s name, a specific motive for the crime or the identities of the two abduction victims who first reported the crime.
“Law enforcement has spoken with both of the victim’s parents, but I want to ensure that all of his family has been notified prior to releasing the victim’s name,” Cascade County Attorney Jon Parker said. “I expect to release it (Wednesday).”
According to court documents, shortly before 6 a.m. Monday morning, a gas station attendant at Friendly’s gas station in Helena told police that a woman traveling with two men in a Subaru Baja approached him, out of earshot of her two male companions. The woman allegedly told the attendant that she and one of the men had been carjacked, and that the other man had a gun.
About four hours later, Helena police located the still unidentified man and woman at a Subway restaurant near the Cedar Street exit off U.S. Interstate 15. The victims identified Miesmer as the man who forced them to drive him to the Helena area.
According to a court affidavit, the two Great Falls abduction victims were waiting for Miesmer outside a residence on the 700 block of 7th Street North when they heard a gunshot from inside the residence. Miesmer then allegedly ran out of the residence and jumped into the back of their car, pointed a gun at the two and told them to leave.
“Miesmer had later advised that he had gone into the residence, walked up to the present occupant and shot him in the face,” the court affidavit states.
Great Falls police later forced entry into the residence, where they found the body “of a male on the kitchen floor, with what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the head, and a .45-caliber casing nearby.”
Police have made a tentative identification of the homicide victim based upon prior knowledge of the residence and the other parties involved in the shooting.
Court documents indicate evidence exists suggesting both the residence where the shooting occurred and the other parties involved have been previously involved in trafficking and the sale of illegal drugs. Miesmer has a prior criminal history that includes crimes of violence, and he is under investigation for drug trafficking.
No criminal history for Miesmer was immediately available at the Cascade County Clerk of Court’s Office. According to the Tribune’s archive, Miesmer graduated from the Montana Youth ChalleNGe Program in 2007. The program is sponsored by the National Guard and held at University of Montana Western in Dillon.
