The case of the unknown killer of Oregon teachers Steven Haugen & Jeanette Bauman was a web-exclusive case on AMW's old website. Below is the archived description of the case:
Two Teachers Found Slain Near Oregon Campground
Police investigating the killing of a former St. Regis couple in a remote wooded area are asking for the help of campers who may have seen them.
Stevan Haugen, 54, an Oakridge middle school counselor, was found dead Friday afternoon near a campsite alongside his girlfriend, Jeanette Bauman, 56, a teacher. Haugen's dog was also found dead.
The couple was shot to death, officials said.
Melinda Kletzok, a spokeswoman for the Lane County Sheriff's Office, said police are asking for the public's help - specifically from campers who were in the Camper's Flat area near Oakridge late last week.
The license plates were removed from Haugen's vehicle, and police believe whoever shot the couple took the plates. Drivers who spot the plates - which have the number CL47763 - are asked to call 9-1-1.
The death of the couple - who are both from Montana - is being investigated as a double homicide.
Haugen taught reading and coached track at Westridge Middle School in Oakridge, said Principal Gary Stevenson. Haugen was born and raised in Kalispell. He had worked as an outdoor guide in Montana and as a recreation director in Park City, Utah. He had also worked in the St. Regis School District in Montana from 1997 to 2003.
Bauman lived in Power, north of Great Falls, from 1984 to 1998, where she served two terms on the school board and helped raise money for the town's football, track and baseball complex, area residents said.
After earning her teaching degree, Bauman moved to St. Regis, where she taught high school business classes from 2000 to 2003. Bauman had recently moved to Oakridge to work as a teacher, having previously worked in Longview, Wash. -AP
Thoughts? There was an update in 2012 when it was announced deceased serial killer Israel Keyes was looked into as a possible suspect. Keyes admitted to killing eight people across the U.S. between 2001 and 2012 before he committed suicide in his Alaska jail cell.
Authorities say Keyes admitted killing four people in Washington state: an unnamed couple sometime between 2001 and 2005; and two others, who were also not named, in separate killings between 2005 and 2006. The FBI said it was unclear whether these people lived in Washington, whether they were visiting the state or whether Keyes kidnapped them in another state and dumped them in Washington.
A timeline released by the FBI shows that in April 2005, Keyes was in Washington state and British Columbia. It was just a few months later when Haugen & Bauman's bodies were found in the nearby state of Oregon.
As for my thoughts and theories, I've stated before that internet sleuths (and yes, I'm fully aware we're sort of internet sleuths too), sometimes try too hard to connect Israel Keyes (and to a lesser extent Luka Magnotta) to every single unsolved case of the planet, even more so than other killers. However, this is one case where I actually think there's valid reason to suspect Keyes, seeing as his whereabouts, M.O. and the time frame actually match up here. I guess you can call my pontificating a 'broken clock is right twice a day' theory.
