Family of a missing Tama County woman is begging the public to help track her down.
Rita Papakee has been missing for more than three months. The 41-year-old member of the Meskwaki tribe was last seen by her family in mid-January.
“I just want her found and I want her brought home,” said Iris Roberts, Papakee’s mother. “I would like to beg anybody with some kind of information — because I know there’s has got to be somebody out there that knows something — for them to contact authorities.”
Meskwaki police said family last saw Papakee January 16. She was at the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel. After, Papakee’s sister dropped her off at a friend’s place on the tribe’s settlement. Family waited until February to report Papakee missing. They said the mother of four had a habit of disappearing for a couple weeks at time, but never this long.
Tribal police have partnered with the FBI and other agencies to find Papakee. Officials said they’re checking out every lead. So far, no results. Officials also said they’re hesitant to suspect anything sinister has happened.
“We don’t have any evidence of foul play,” said Chief Jeff Schrock with the Meskwaki Nation Police Department. “Nothing has been recovered — anything on her person or even herself. At this point in the investigation we just have a missing person case.”
Family and friends have been forming daily search parties to look for Papakee since mid-February. The group has trudged through wooden areas near Tama with cadaver dogs without any luck.
Those with information on Papakee can contact the Meskwaki Nation Police Department, 641-484-4844.
Thoughts? The hope here is Papakee does sometimes disappear for weeks at a time according to her family. Unfortunately, it has now been months and I have yet to see any reports of her surfacing again.
