Oklahoma authorities are searching for a couple wanted in the Midwest City slayings of an off-duty Sapulpa police officer and another man who is the father of one of the suspects.
Sapulpa Police Department Lt Trey Pritchard and his cousin Jeffrey Grafton, both 46, were found Saturday night at the Traveler’s Inn Motel on the city's south side after an employee reported an unresponsive person in the room.
Pritchard and Grafton went to the motel while trying to recover a truck that was stolen from Grafton, Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes said.
First-degree murder warrants have been issued for the arrest of Grafton's son, 22-year-old Jonathan Grafton and his girlfriend, 21-year-old Daphne Mason, Clabes said.
The younger Grafton checked into motel around 10am on Saturday.
Some of the suspect's past Facebook posts referenced drug use and he used the phrase 'Murder is the only consistent answer to life's problems' as his status in March.
Clabes said the two are considered armed and dangerous.
'This is not a 'whodunit,' Clabes said.
'We don't know where they are at, that's why we are asking for public assistance.'
The cause of the deaths was not released and it is unclear when the victims were killed.
The flag outside the Sapulpa Police Department was lowered to half-staff to honor Pritchard, a veteran of the force who served for more than 15 years.
The bodies have been sent to the state medical examiner's office.
Clabes said family members told officers that Jonathan Grafton had stolen his father's truck and that Pritchard and Jeffrey Grafton tracked the pickup to the motel using the vehicle's GPS system.
'What we believe is that [Jeffrey] Grafton went into the hotel room first, confronted his son and his son's girlfriend,' Clabes said.
'Apparently the older Grafton did not come out of the hotel room, and then Pritchard went into the hotel room, and a short time later the 2000 model truck fled the area.
The stolen pickup truck was found later Sunday in Yukon, west of Oklahoma City, Clabes said.
He added that officers are working with Oklahoma City police, Tulsa police and the US marshals service in an effort to find the suspects.
Both Jonathan Grafton and Mason are believed to be from the Sapulpa area, Clabes said.
The chief added: ''It's sad when anybody loses their life. Especially if it's done by who we believe is a relative of one of the victims.
'And in the fact that it's that often when a police officer most likely trying to help a relative recover a vehicle and then loses his life over something like this.'
The younger Grafton pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled dangerous substance and drug paraphernalia in Creek County in June and was given a five-year deferred sentence.
Anyone with information about Grafton and Mason's whereabouts is asked to call law enforcement officials or the Midwest City Police Department at 405-739-1306.
