A 19-year-old man wanted in connection with three murders is on the run and is aware of the charges against him, York City Police Detective 1st class Jeffrey Spence said this week.
City detectives allege that Durell Cotton shot and killed two York brothers last month and was responsible in the shooting death of Jordan Breeland two years ago.
Court documents indicate Cotton lived in York on West Poplar Street but does not have a fixed address.
At the time Breeland, 21, was killed, police asserted the shooting was the result of a long feud between two gangs in York — Parkway and Southside.
Detectives say they don't have evidence to say if Cotton's involvement in the shooting last month is a result of the gang feud.
"I guess what you have at this point is a coincidence," Spence said.
On the night of June 12, Angel Berrios, 21, and his younger brother Abdiel Vazquez-Soto, 19, were shot and killed in their car in the northwest part of York, near Farquhar Park. Police have not released a motive, only alleging that Cotton was the shooter and knew at least one of the brothers. Lt. Troy Bankert, who commands the city's detective division, said there had been an ongoing disagreement between Cotton and one of the brothers.
Over the last two weeks, city police have announced that Cotton was charged in the brothers' deaths and Breeland's death.
One other man, Elvin Mateo, 21, also was charged in Breeland's death and was in custody at York County Prison on other charges.
Reflecting on the crimes Cotton is accused of, Spence said, "I don't know what the legal definition of a serial killer is. ...I could tell you he's wanted for three murders."
According to the FBI, there have been multiple definitions of serial murder in law enforcement. Generally, there are three victims and a period of time, or a "cooling off," between the murders.

Thoughts? Durell Cotton is an extremely dangerous fugitive and even though one of the victims was a confirmed gang member, that does not excuse his death. Even if all three of these murders are gang-related, that doesn't mean that innocent people could be struck by any bullet that Durell fires in the future. As far as whether Durell is a serial killer, I personally think that it takes three separate incidents to become a serial killer, but if he's not located, then that could be a sad reality.
