Scott Kleeschulte went missing from his Saint Charles, Missouri home when he was only 9 years old. The case was on AMW's old website, although I don't know if it was ever aired on the show itself. Below is the Charley Project description of the case:
Scott was last seen at approximately 4:30 or 5:00 p.m. in his hometown of St. Charles, Missouri. He had left his home on Leverenz Drive and was walking down Ken Drive towards West Adams at the time. A heavy thunderstorm affected the St. Charles area on the day of Scott's disappearance. A witness told authorities that Scott had been seen walking before the storm hit the neighborhood and afterwards. He has never been heard from again. He was a student at Coverdell Elementary School at the time of his disappearance, and vanished on the last day of the school year.
Bloodhounds tracked Scott's scent for about five miles northeast on Fox Hill Road, then lost the trail. Authorities searched numerous man-made tunnels and caves in the area and also dredged streams in an effort to locate Scott, but no evidence was produced. Some people believe that Scott drowned in a flash flood which affected the region after the massive storm, but authorities and his family members believe he was abducted.
In 2007, investigators began investigating Michael J. Devlin for possible involvement in Scott's disappearance and in several other cases, including the 1991 disappearance of Charles "Arlin" Henderson, and the 2005 disappearance of Bianca Piper. Shawn Hornbeck, a fifteen-year-old boy who disappeared in 2002, and William "Ben" Ownby, a thirteen-year-old boy who was abducted in 2007, were both found alive and well in Devlin's house in January 2007. Ben had been missing for five days and Shawn for over four years. Both boys had been held against their will by Devlin, who subequently pleaded guilty to kidnapping and child molestation and was sentenced to life in prison. Authorities initially suspected Devlin could be linked to other missing child cases, and formed a multi-jurisdictional task force to investigate this theory. In October 2007 the task force dissolved, as it could not find any evidence that implicated Devlin in any other children's disappearances.
Scott's parents still live in the house they resided in when he disappeared, and they hope for closure in his case. His disappearance remains unsolved.
Before I get to asking for thoughts, there are a few more updates in this case:
-In November 2011, St. Charles Police gave the case a fresh review. They reinterviewed neighbors and came across new details. Detectives got a search warrant for a home near Scott’s. They brought out cadaver dogs and drilled holes through the concrete in the garage and other areas around the home. But they came up empty.
-In August 2013, a Florida inmate named Chuck Miceli came forward claiming to have information on the case. Chuck Miceli, 47, is a former police officer from the Chicago area, who authorities say has turned informant on several other cases. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2010 on a federal fraud charge, and he’s spent the majority of the time since then in prison in Florida.
Miceli came to the attention of local authorities after he claimed that a former cellmate is the man who abducted Scott on June 8, 1988.
He claims to have written documentation of the details not only involving Scott’s disappearance, but 13 to 15 other abductions and killings of young children and women between 1978 and 2005 by the same man.
As of this posting, Miceli's claims have not led to the discovery of new evidence or new information regarding the disappearance of Scott Kleeschulte.
Thoughts? It seems there were a lot of mysterious disappearances of young boys/girls in Missouri around the time Scott Kleeschulte went missing. This does give credibility to the serial abductor angle. Although part of me wonders what exactly Micelli's motivations were for coming forward. The whole controversy in the Sarah Pender case involves an informant on a "snitch list" who testified in many cases he might in actuality not really have had knowledge of. While Prosecutors will of course use jailhouse informants, sometimes juries themselves are less than impressed with them.
A lot of the times a suspect will come forward with information hoping to get a lighter or reduced sentence on a case. What they don't say is the reason they have that information is they are connected to the case. So crazy as it sounds, especially the precedent it sets for people that want to help, I feel Micelli should be looked at as a suspect as well. I'm not accusing him and it doesn't mean he's guilty or anything, but you have to explore all possible angles.
In any case, I don't believe Kleeschulte died by accident and do believe he was abducted. Sadly, the chances of finding him alive get reduced every year this case goes on. But there is always hope for justice at the very least.
