In the past year, six separate women have disappeared from a small Ohio town. Among them, four have been found dead, while two are still missing, sparking fear of a serial killer.
Chillicothe, Ohio is a town of only 21,000 people. And although four women have wound up dead from the small community an hour South of Columbus, local police aren't convinced that one person is behind the deaths. According to local police, their investigation hasn't produced any evidence one person is behind any of the missing or deceased women.
However, some eerie similarities have those living in Chillicothe convinced otherwise. According to a prosecutor, the women went to some of the places and knew some of the same people. The women had reportedly knew each other from attending the same drug rehab facility. The women were also believed to be prostituting themselves to fund their heroin addiction.
But perhaps the biggest reason people think there may be a serial killer in their midst is that all four of the dead women were found in or near bodies of water. One was wrapped in a sheet. Another had been shot in the head.
The following are the women who have wound up missing or dead. (CNN article has pictures, and a bit more detail, this is more of a quick recap.):
Charlotte Trego- 27 years old. Went missing May 3rd, 2014. Status: Still Missing:
Charlotte's mother reported her missing to police after not having seen her for two weeks. She said her daughter was addicted to heroin.
Tameka Lynch- 30 years old. Went missing May 2014. Status: Dead:
A few days after Trego disappeared, Tameka Lynch went missing. A year later, on May 24, 2015, four kayakers discovered a woman's body -- later identified as Lynch -- lying on a sandbar in Paint Creek
Her death was ruled a drug overdose.
Wanda Lemons- 37 years old. Went missing November 3rd, 2014. Status: Still Missing:
Wanda's mother had not heard from her for two months when she decided it was time to report her as missing.
A friend said he saw Lemons on November 3, 2014, according to a Facebook page dedicated to finding her. He heard she was leaving for Texas with a truck driver. Lemons has made contact with her adult daughter via text message and posted to Facebook on November 5.
Shasta Himelrick- 20 years old. Went missing December 26th, 2014. Status: Dead:
Shasta Himelrick was expecting a baby when she went missing the day after Christmas last year. A text message in the early hours was one of her last signs of life, and shortly afterward, a surveillance camera captured her on video. Later, Himelrick's car was found abandoned.
On January 2, she was found dead in the Scioto River. The Ross County coroner found cocaine and oxycodone- a narcotic painkiller- in her system and ruled her death suicide by drowning.
Tiffany Sayre- 26 years old. Went missing May 11th, 2015 Status: Dead
Tiffany Sayre's body was found on June 20, wrapped in a sheet alongside a creek bed not far from where Lynch's body had been found four weeks earlier. Sayre was a mother of two, and she also reportedly struggled with drug addiction.
The night she was last heard from, a friend said, Sayre was visiting men at a hotel room, according to a Facebook page dedicated to finding her. Another friend reportedly told police that Sayre had visited the apartment of her late boyfriend, which had been broken into.
Timberly Claytor- 38 years old. Went missing May 29th, 2015 Status: Dead
Timberly Claytor, a mother of five, was found dead with three gunshot wounds to her head late last month. An old friend said Claytor confided to her that she was addicted to heroin.
After Claytor's death, Chillicothe police announced a crackdown on drugs and prostitution in the area as part of their investigation into the six incidents in the past year. The Ross County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio State Patrol are participating.
Though police still don't necessarily believe that a single person is responsible for all of the women's fates, they have printed the women's faces on a flier and distributed it throughout Chillicothe. They hope that someone will give them key tips to help them solve all the cases.
(According to articles, The Sheriff's Office and police request that anyone with information on the missing and slain women contact the Task Force Hotline at 740-774-FIND (740-774-3463) or email Findme@RossSheriff.com.)
Thoughts? Obviously not all cases might be connected to one person. Could all six possibly be connected? Of course in my opinion. But perhaps it's just three of the cases, perhaps only one case, who knows. Only two of the four deaths (Timberly Claytor, Tiffany Sayre) have been ruled a homicide. A 36-year old man named Jason McCrary has been named as a person of interest in Claytor's death, but he has not officially been charged with any crime. It should be important to note, according to the find Charlotte Trego Facebook page, McCrary has been previously convicted of Unlawful Sexual Conduct of a Minor and is a registered sex offender. As of June 2nd, 2015, McCrary was locked up in the Ross County Jail for failing to register as a sex offender.
Despite what police say, even they would have to admit the strange coincidences can't be immediately dismissed. And for many the question is- are they just coincidences?
