While still trying to celebrate a holiday weekend, residents in a few Maine towns where murder suspect Robert Burton is possibly hiding remain on edge.
Robert G. Burton, 38, is suspected of murdering his girlfriend. As tragic as the circumstances are, based on Burton's past, his current fugitive status likely comes as no surprise to those who knew him. Especially those in law enforcement.
In 2000, Burton was convicted of terrorizing, assault, tampering with a victim and violation of conditions of release in a domestic violence case involving his girlfriend at the time. He was sentenced to a year and one month in prison.
In June 2002, Burton broke into a camp at Whetstone Pond in Abbot, Maine. After he entered, Burton waited there until the mother of his former girlfriend arrived. He threatened to kill the woman while holding a rifle and tried to strangle her to keep her from screaming. The woman managed to convince Burton to leave the camp, and he fled on foot with a rifle, ammunition and a large knife.
Burton eluded police for two weeks before they found him at an abandoned camp and arrested him after a four-hour standoff.
Burton was subsequently convicted of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, assault and burglary.
He was sentenced in 2003 to 10 years in prison.
In February 2012, Burton again violated his conditions of release, but this time his probation was revoked, and he was sentenced to prison for three years.
On the morning of June 5th, 2015, a few months after Burton was released, the body of his girlfriend, Stephanie Ginn Gebo, 37, was discovered inside her home by her two young children. Police would not release Gebo's cause of death, however it would be ruled a homicide. Burton would soon become the prime suspect in the case.
In the past month, there have been confirmed sightings of Burton in the towns of Parkman and Guilford in Maine. The confirmed sighting of Burton on June 17 in Guilford occurred where the state’s Interconnected Trail System nears Route 15 and Low’s Covered Bridge along the Piscataquis River.
Despite the sightings, Burton has not been caught, in all likelihood because he has been described as "very woods wise' by law enforcement. Police believe Burton is still hiding out in Piscataquis County, and they warned area residents, tourists and those with vacation camps to be cautious as the holiday weekend approached. Police believe Burton is breaking into remote camps at night and is on the run in the thickly wooded region during the day.
Maine State Police urge anyone who notices anything suspicious to call them immediately. Their telephone number is (207) 973-3700.
Thoughts? Obviously this is a dangerous guy, and instead of being able to handle rejection, has a history of kidnapping (or in this case allegedly murdering) the woman he's with instead. This is somewhat reminiscent of the search for Richard Matt and David Sweat, although Burton, despite recently being in prison, is not an escapee. It seems those in Piscataquis County are already aware of the hunt for Burton. However, if you're reading this forum now learning about Burton, and also plan to visit anywhere in the surrounding area, please be aware of this fugitive, take caution, and call police if you see him and/or notice anything out of the ordinary.
