"The Nevada Division of Parole and Probation is asking for your help finding a man who was convicted of a double murder in Reno more than 30 years ago.
54-year-old John McKague was released on parole back in August of last year.
He had been convicted of a 1978 murder in a Reno motel when he was 17. The victims were tied up and shot in the head.
Law enforcement says he disappeared from a halfway house at the end of march.
"He's got a history of drug and alcohol abuse as well as mental health issues. The public is urged to contact law enforcement, as he is seen as dangerous,” says Sgt. Lisa Pierrott, Nevada Department of Parole and Probation.
If you know where McKague is, call the fugitive apprehension unit at (775) 684-2644"
The above was from a local news article, but first a couple of more notes:
-John Mckague committed the murder with his cousin Kenneth McKague. The two were planning on robbing the Silver Dollar Motel when one of the owners, Irene Hembry, unexpectedly appeared. Kenneth would tie up Irene and her husband William Hembry, while John went to look for money and jewelry. When he came back to the room, he discovered that his cousin had shot the Hemberys in the back of the head. Kenneth was sentenced to death, but would die of lung cancer in prison in March 2000 while awaiting execution. John received life with the possibility of parole. (which was obviously initially granted).
Thoughts? First of all, even though John McKague was not the shooter in the robbery, in the eyes of the law in most states, you are just guilty as the trigger man if someone dies as the result of a violent felony you participated in. This is still a guilty murder suspect, unaccounted for, with a history of mental health issues, so he is extremely dangerous. Also, as mentioned above, John was only 17 years old when the Hembrys were killed. That also does not mean he's not dangerous today.
